It’s beauty month here at L&C and there is no better woman to love this month than the beauty news editor for Allure Magazine, Catherine O’Neill. A longtime L&C friend and beauty girl crush, Catherine landed permanently in New York City less than five years ago and has had the beauty industry game on lockdown since then. We recently got a chance to catch up with her on everything from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, to Scott Disick and baby goats. Oh, and we also got a few of her tips for success…
Catherine is a California girl who was Midwestern-educated before she found her way to New York City post-college graduation and landed her self-proclaimed dream job at Allure. Now the beauty news editor for the magazine, her day-to-day tasks include editing the Beauty Reporter section, attending events, pitching stories ideas, and working with the art and photo teams to keep the magazine looking pretty. Well that, and hanging with stars like Blake Lively and models like Adriana Lima. Every single day holds it’s own “pinch me!” moment, and Catherine is happy to share her tips to help all the makeup lovers out there find their dream careers.
Be ready and looking for any door to open
Catherine got her foot in the door at Allure through her college advisor’s boss’s daughter-in-law (we think we followed that…) She set up an informational interview months before her graduation so by the time she earned her cap and gown, she already had a job!
Do your research
Catherine encourages our readers to “Read, read, read!” Whether that is blogs like ours or your favorite magazine, keeping up with whatever industry interests you most is vital to being up to date on the latest news, trends and advice.
“Read every magazine you can get your hands on, learn its voice, know its writers and editors, and connect with the people who work there,” she says firmly. ” That way, when a door opens, you’ll be standing right there in front of it.”
Never forget both your big AND little goals
On her first day at Allure, Catherine compiled a list of personal and professional goals. They were short term things like “write a feature in your first six months,” or goals with longer-reaching affects, including “work with every editor on staff,” and “find a mentor.”
She even made some of them her computer passwords so she was reminded of them every morning when she started her day. By having a constant reminder of all the things she wanted to accomplish, but still had yet to, were driving forces in her daily tasks and beyond.
Appreciate every moment…especially the unexpected ones
From planning a photo shoot with actress Blake Lively that involved baby goats (they originally wanted domesticated deers) to writing 41 hair how-tos for one guide issue, Catherine’s work life is anything but ordinary.
One of her favorite moments, however, was her first time backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show with “Adriana Lima offering me a bite of her blueberry muffin while Doutzen Kroes (with no makeup and her hair pinned up in curls) strutted around in 6-inch heels and a pink silk robe.” Talk about a “tough job!”
Allow yourself to dream big…and be silly
Not all of Catherine’s dreams and goals are quite so serious. When asked who her dream celebrity to feature would be, her answer was more of the reality-TV realm.
“Honestly, I’m dying to interview Scott Disick about his beauty routine. Male grooming fascinates me and I can only imagine that his is Patrick Batemen level intricate.”
She’s a pretty glamorous reality TV fan though, and we can’t wait to continue Keeping up with Cat as her career continues to advance and grow.
