Starting with Cinder-fricken-rella all the way to Miss Carrie Bradshaw, women have had a thing for shoes. We all love them, but few of us can make our lives around them. Our Women We Love this week have that great honor (and fun!) for a job! Tamie Ingham and Jasmine Yarbrough are the Co-owners and Designers of the luxury shoe brand Mara & Mine, and now they’re telling us how we can get into their shoes…both professionally and fashionably.
HOW DID YOU TWO MEET AND BEGIN THIS VENTURE TOGETHER?
We met through a mutual friend and coincidentally began working together on photo shoots and runway shows. We built a strong friendship and bond. After a vacation we shared together in Italy we wanted to extend our love for fashion and begin creating flat shoes for stylish women on the go.
HOW DO YOUR ROLES AND STRENGTHS DIFFER?
We work together on everything and are one another’s sounding boards, however Tamie’s strengths are more creative whereas Jasmine’s strengths are more business focused; including organization and operations. Together we make a powerful team.
WHAT IS THE TOUGHEST PART ABOUT CO-MANAGING A BRAND?
We work really well together, however, you must always have an open mind and be willing to support each others ideas and decisions. It is integral to be able to get your point across without upsetting or offending your co-worker.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?
Our inspiration comes from a woman’s off duty style focusing on architecture, art and local fashion from destinations we travel to.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON SHOES AND ACCESSORIES AS OPPOSED TO CLOTHING?
Working in fashion and being on set daily, running to castings and pulling looks for photo shoots from PR we were constantly on our feet needing to look chic. We decided we couldn’t find footwear that was comfortable as well as fashion forward thus we started our own collection.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Jasmine: Meeting like minded and creative people within the industry.
Tamie: creating something we are passionate about and seeing it on the streets being worn by customers.
AND THE TOUGHEST?
Traveling is great for business but can be testing being so far away from family and friends.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
We were advised by an entrepreneur in the fashion world to focus on one product style and not to expand too quickly. We feel this has been beneficial advice.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR GIRLS TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
Be creative and think outside of the box. An infrastructure is so important within a business, however, you need vision and you need to believe in yourself.
What is one thing you wish you would have known about starting a business before you did? Having a strong team of people you love to work with. Having the best accountant and book keeper is key!
