Don’t lie, we all have to admit that we straight up love Vanderpump Rules on BRAVO. There’s no better way to spend a Monday night than to hang out with friends (and wine) and follow the antics of SUR staff like Jax and Stassi and Katie Maloney. But now we can get the inside scoop on the sass, style and social media of our favorite reality stars. Katie Maloney has come a long way since last season, and she is giving us her insight on everything from managing fame to representing herself well online…
TELL US ABOUT ALL THE PROJECTS YOU HAVE GOING ON (ASIDE FROM THE SHOW)?
My beauty and lifestyle blog Pucker & Pout is a big part of my life. I started it – along with my friend Jennifer- almost two years ago. It’s been so much fun to create content for the site. Beauty tips and DIYs that I love and use daily. It’s been quite a learning curve as well. We really put a lot of time and consideration into everything we post and sometimes it’s a lot of work.
WITH A BLOG AND FILMING, HOW DO YOU BALANCE EVERYTHING AND STILL HAVE TIME FOR FUN?
It’s not easy, I will say that. My group of friends love to go out and it feels sometimes like one big social outing after another. I sometimes have to reel it back and remind myself to keep balance. You got to work hard to play hard after all!
WHAT ARE TIPS YOU HAVE FOR MANAGING A CAREER AND STILL MAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF?
I try to make myself my main priority. Listen to my heart and my gut. If I feel I need quiet time or to get away for a bit I drop everything and do that. If I need to be working out more I make that a priority. Without sounding too “out there” our body is a vessel and needs to be taken care of and that spans beyond being healthy. You have to take care of your heart and your mind. Sometimes when I need to clear my head I watch episodes of Sex and the City or play a game on my phone. Menial tasks help me recharge.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
Confucius might have said, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” (I think that’s how the saying goes!)
Truthfully I need to be inspired or I lose interest. Working on projects or jobs I can fully invest myself in is very fulfilling. Dedication and tenacity will take you far.
GIVEN THE METEORIC RISE OF SOCIAL MEDIA (AND YOUR CASTS’S PARTICIPATION IN IT), DO YOU HAVE TIPS FOR HOW TO REPRESENT YOURSELF WELL ONLINE?
Be authentic first and foremost. It’s become a bit of an epidemic in social media to mis-represent yourself. I am not saying you shouldn’t throw a filter on your photos, but allow it to still have that air of intimacy. I think the allure of social media is the voyeuristic nature of peering into someone’s life.
Also, don’t be a troll. Don’t use it as a tool to spread negativity. I see and sometimes read awful comments on my posts and while I try to refrain from responding I just can’t help it. I can’t believe some of the things people say to others, it’s heart breaking.
HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED SINCE THE LAST EPISODE OF VANDERPUMP RULES?
If we are talking about since before the season 4 premiere things have been really great. I feel like I’m the happiest I’ve been and feel the most grounded in myself. Last year was rough. My relationship with Tom was really tested, I lost one of my best friends and felt a little hopeless and lost. Since then I have found my center and a renewed sense of confidence not just in my relationships but myself as well.
IS IT ALL REALLY AS DRAMATIC AS IT SEEMS ON TV?
It really is! And it was before the show began. Thankfully all the tears and fights and drama has provided lots of entertainment, that’s the silver lining.
YOU HAVE TO DRESS FOR CAMERA ALL THE TIME! HOW DO YOU MIX HIGH AND LOW END STYLES?
I say invest in the staples. A classic black blazer or jacket that is tailored is timeless. A pencil skirt or trousers are very versatile. I tend to go low end on trendy pieces to mix with high end because they are mostly seasonal and you want to get the wear out of what you spend. Zara does an amazing job of bringing a tailored high end look at a cost efficient budget.
NAME 3 THINGS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE IN HER CLOSET FOR THIS WINTER.
- A cozy chunky knit or a poncho is clutch.
- A tailor pea coat or trench.
- A piece with detail. For example, fringe, tassels, leather, or gold hardware like zippers or buttons. Those types are great for layering and add a little extra something.
