Desiree Hartsock captured the title of America’s Sweetheart the instant she appeared on screen during Sean Lowe’s season of The Bachelor. She was sweet, optimistic, smart and had beat the odds of her rough upbringing to launch a successful career in the bridal design industry.
After leaving the show without a rose, Desiree was offered a shot at love on her own season of “The Bachelorette,” where she got her happy ending. She’s now married to Chris Siegfried, her final choice on “The Bachelorette,” and is living happily in Seattle, she has a popular blog, and she launched a drop-dead gorgeous collection of wedding dresses with bridal designer Maggie Sottero earlier this year.
Here, we’re catching up with Des on her whirlwind year.
YOU MARRIED CHRIS SIEGFRIED, WHOM YOU MET ON THE BACHELORETTE, EARLIER THIS YEAR. WHAT IS LIKE TO KNOW YOU MET YOUR HUSBAND ON TV? DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT IT?
It was an incredible experience to have met Chris (my husband) on TV but people meet in all sorts of crazy ways. I do think about it and how ironic it is but also how unique of a story ours is. It will be interesting to tell our kids!
HOW’S MARRIED LIFE SO FAR?
I LOVE being married. I was always committed to Chris, but there is something about saying your vows to each other and the bond that gets stronger. I love having a partner to share my daily journey with.
AS A BRIDAL DESIGNER, YOU CREATED YOUR OWN WEDDING DRESS! WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?
I always knew that I wanted something a little different and once I designed it, I was all in. No changes or edits.
YOU ALSO RECENTLY DESIGNED A LINE WITH MAGGIE SOTTERO. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THAT COLLABORATION CAME ABOUT AND THE DRESSES YOU DESIGNED.
It was a dream come true to design my own wedding dresses and be able to wear one down the aisle and the other at the reception. I’ve always wanted to design wedding dresses and so I am so grateful to Maggie Sottero for giving me that opportunity. The collaboration just came about with interest from them at first and worked itself into a really great partnership.
WHAT FIRST DREW YOU TO DESIGNING WEDDING DRESSES?
I knew at a young age that I wanted to be a fashion designer. The love of bridal came about while attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in LA. There is something so delicate and significant about wedding dresses that surpasses any other kind of apparel.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
My first job in design was at a plus-size women’s clothing company (Kiyonna.com) where I started out as a Production Assistant before becoming a designer there. I really learned a lot and will forever cherish those beginning times.
WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGNS?
I’m inspired by natural elements and different eras. I love the roaring 20s, the free-spirited 70s and the peace that the beach and waves give.
WHAT ARE THE BIG TRENDS YOU’RE SEEING IN WEDDING DRESSES FOR THE NEAR FUTURE?
Low, backless dresses have been an ongoing trend these past years and I see that continuing for at least another year or so. Brides want to be timeless but also a little sexy.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO START YOUR OWN LINE?
I do have plans for the future to do my own wedding gown line along with ready to wear for special occasions. Only time will tell when that will come to fruition but I do have designs prepared and am working towards that goal.
IN ADDITION TO DESIGNING, YOU ALSO HAVE AN AWESOME BLOG. WHAT DREW YOU TO BLOGGING?
I like that the blog gives me a voice and an outlet to share all the things that I love. From wedding inspiration to advice and get fit tips, I enjoy every second of it.
HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN TO YOUR SITE?
It’s been great. With all the different categories it targets an array of girls and women.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOUR CAREER?
I definitely want to have my own line!
WOULD YOU EVER DO REALITY TV AGAIN?
I would do it only in the capacity of weddings, travel, faith or fitness since those are the topics I enjoy most.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS AS A DESIGNER?
Believe in yourself! No matter what other people are doing or achieving continue to work hard, keep dreaming and never give up.
WHAT’S THE BEST CAREER ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
Don’t be afraid to ask.
