For working women and busy fashionistas like us, finding time to make a hair appointment or get the perfect blow-out can get pretty tricky. Do I try and go before work? If I go after work, does that mean I can skip the gym? Luckily for women with packed calendars, there’s now an app for that! Blohaute is an on-demand beauty app, newly launched in Chicago, that sends beauty services right to your door. Its pretty much Uber for hairstyling…so we are very much on board! Founder and stylist Amanda Diedrich is cluing us in to starting her own company, and always pursuing her passion in style…
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE (SUPER USEFUL!) IDEA FOR YOUR COMPANY?
I always knew I loved strictly styling and danced around the idea of starting a finishing salon in Chicago. I wanted to start something that combined both, but just couldn’t figure out how to set my idea apart from others. It wasn’t until a client of mine made a light bulb go off in my head! Previously working at a salon in Bucktown, I gained a loyal clientele of women who would come in just for blowouts and styling. One day, one of my clients came running in frantically late to her appointment because her babysitter was late and she couldn’t find parking. We began talking and got on the topic of me coming to her home because it would be so much more convenient. That’s when it hit me – a service that sends the salon right to your door with convenience as a key factor.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO REACH THIS POINT IN YOUR CAREER?
I’m the type of person who will do whatever I can to change the feeling of being unhappy […] I don’t believe I did anything different than any other person to get to where I am now, but I did take a risk to follow my dreams I chose a profession that is my true passion. I always take on any hairstyling opportunity that comes my way and most importantly, am open to learning new things and receiving advice from others. I have great role models in my life that inspire me and motivate me to do just that every step of the way.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU NOW?
No day is the same for me. On weekdays, I typically wake up and try to motivate myself to go to Pure Barre (ha!), catch up on emails/appointments and work on my weekly hair tutorial for the blog I contribute to. I’m also the Lead Stylist for the beauty product line, Fave4, so I’ll have conference calls throughout the week. Many days you can also find me taking appointments I have scheduled for the day and monitoring appointments coming in for the Blohaute team. I’ll wrap up my day sitting down to eat a late dinner with my husband (95% of the time we eat out).
HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME INVOLVED IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?
I grew up with a mom who was very into fashion, but she was definitely not skilled in the hair department. As a little girl, I was obsessed with Barbie and American Girl, mainly because of their hair. I taught myself how to braid and style my dolls hair when I was roughly four or five years old. From that point on, I knew I had an attraction to the beauty industry. In high school, I did all of my friends hair for any school dance, and loved it. But it wasn’t until I went off to DePaul University when I realized that it wasn’t what I wanted to do with myself. Having the conversation with my parents, telling them I wanted to go to cosmetology school was a bit terrifying, but my dad said something to me that day that has stuck with me and I truly believe, “If hair is your passion and what you love, than you will be way more successful at it than any other career.”
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PROFESSIONAL THING YOU’VE LEARNED?
The beauty industry, especially the hairstyling/salon world, is very competitive. There will always be a million hair salons, hairstylists and eventually more beauty apps like Blohaute. Too often we get caught up in worrying about what our competitors are doing that we lose touch of what is really important. I have learned throughout this whole process of building Blohaute that instead of trying to bring each other down, we need to empower one another.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?
That’s a tough one- there are so many great things about my job! I get to meet many amazing clients, to travel across the U.S. and share my hairstyling knowledge, to be creative every second of the day and most importantly, do what I love!
AND THE HARDEST?
Balancing time. I love staying super busy, but I need to get better at setting aside some time to shut my mind off from work and spend time with my husband and family.
HOW DO YOU THINK TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?
The beauty industry is completely changing for the better. I recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal that talked about how on-demand beauty apps are on the rise. It’s true! People want convenience in every aspect of their life nowadays, especially in big cities. Whether it be an app like Blohaute or an app that simply lets you book in a salon, they make pampering a lot more convenient. I truly believe there will be a point when we won’t even need to pick up the phone to book an appointment!
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR LAUNCHING A COMPANY?
The best advice I received is to focus on the quality over quantity. It is more important to take your time building your company exactly the way you want it to be, rather than trying to just build an empire overnight.
AND UNTIL WE CAN GET AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOU, DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLING TIPS?
To get that perfect undone beachy wave, let you hair air dry. Go in with a 1-1.5in curling wand and curl only the middle section of your hair (leaving ends out) and always curl away from your face. This is all you have to do to achieve that perfect lived in, effortless wave.
