Finding a good work/life balance can always be a tricky game, and no one knows that better than author and Good Morning America contributor, Tory Johnson. Johnson spent years putting her work and family ahead of her own personal health, but when she was given a blast of harsh reality from her bosses, Johnson realized that her health, and her weight, were affecting her job. So she stepped up and made “The Shift,” losing 62 pounds the healthy way, all the while continuing to grow her career with a best-selling book and support groups with the same name. Now she’s sharing her secrets for success, in the boardroom and the with the scale…
YOU’VE GROWN YOUR BUSINESS INTO A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR EMPIRE! WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF BUSINESS ADVICE EVERY WOMAN SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND?
Learn how to sell. Too often we focus on dotting every I and crossing every T, hoping to get everything perfect — the logo, the color scheme, the fonts. We don’t invest nearly enough time selling — talking directly about our product or service to prospective buyers. Without sales, there’s no business.
WE LOVE THAT YOU PROMOTE THE HIRING OF WOMEN IN THE WORKFORCE! WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN JOB CANDIDATES?
Curiosity. Show me that you like to read, explore, ask questions, seek answers. I want to know that you’ll dig and redo and plot and plan and dream and scheme to get to the desired results.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A REALISTICALLY HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WHEN YOU’RE ON THE ROAD PROMOTING YOUR BOOK OR SPEAKING?
I used to think that it was impossible to stay healthy on the road. I’d think what happens on the road, stays on the road. But really, what happened on the road, stayed on my ass and thighs. I gave up the excuses and I vowed to find healthy options. They are all around us if we choose to look for them.
WHAT ARE SMALL SHIFTS WE CAN ALL MAKE EACH DAY TO IMPROVE DAILY HEALTH EFFORTS?
Sit less. I went cold turkey and got rid of my desk and comfy chair in favor of a Rebel treadmill desk. Now I walk or stand all day. Even if you can’t buy one of these, make it a rule: if you’re talking or texting, you’re standing. Stop drinking soda–even diet soda. I gave it up three years ago and I don’t miss it. Make one food swap. Think of the one thing that you know is your weakness and dump it. You may love it, but it doesn’t love you back.
I’ve gotten a lot of flack for it, but I’d also say to dump the cheat days. Rewarding healthy eating with crappy foods is akin to an alcoholic celebrating a month of sobriety with a beer. It doesn’t work. It’s torturing yourself.
WHERE DO YOU FIND THE “SPARKLE & HUSTLE” THAT’S PART OF YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
Inspiration comes from the women I serve. They’re kind enough to trust me with their ideas and struggles and triumphs and I’m proud to be their best cheerleader.
Plus, my kids inspire me to be my best. I want to be able to give them everything and more — and that requires being very good at what I do.
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU’VE NEVER DONE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO?
Take a full month off to travel to Greece or Thailand. I’ve never had more than a week off. That’s got to change!
