I can’t believe we haven’t featured today’s Woman We Love yet (and thanks to our newest contributor, Janelle McKenzie, for suggesting it!). She is none other than my friend and colleague Laura Saur. I’ve always been impressed with Laura’s natural, seemingly effortless eye for style–in addition to her blog, LoSo Fancy, she’s also a photo stylist at Joss & Main.
What I love most about Laura, though, is how she got to where she is today. After graduating college with a degree in nursing a few years ago and landing a job in her field, Laura realized that the career path she was headed down was not what she was passionate about. So, with no concrete backup plan in place, she turned down the job to pursue her dream of working as a stylist. And somehow she made it happen. Talk about hustle.
Here, we chat with Laura about starting her blog, her career 180, and how she managed to make her dream job a reality.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORKING AND BLOGGING?
It’s a tough duo to juggle, I will say that. Blogging has pretty much become a part-time job, but thankfully it’s a hobby I love enough where it’s not a daunting task to do each week. Working a 40-hour week leaves little time on the weekdays to take photos for posts so instead I use the work days to draw inspiration from daily fashion newsletters, fellow bloggers, magazines, or Pinterest. I jot down my ideas into my little notebook that I take with me everywhere and save the outfit photos to take on the weekends (weather permitting). It takes more work than most people realize!
HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO START YOUR BLOG?
I started my blog to have as a digital portfolio for fashion styling. I went to college to study nursing and in the beginning of post-grad life I realized that career wasn’t for me. Fashion styling was where my heart had always led me. Starting my blog was my way of stepping into the world of fashion, gaining an online presence, working to make a name for myself, and having my own creative space to show people what I can do.
SO YOU BASICALLY DID A COMPLETE CAREER 180 AFTER COLLEGE. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? WHAT HAS IT TAUGHT YOU?
It wasn’t easy and I can’t say I’ve been 100 percent successful since, but I definitely feel like I’m headed in the right direction. It was scary at first because I was essentially starting from scratch. I had no official background in business or fashion, so leaving behind a potentially steady career in health care was nerve-wracking especially for my parents who had already determined my future for me. However, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to pave my own way and prove to them what I could do. I think when you feel passionate enough about a goal or dream, you get this strong gut feeling that nothing will stand in your way. If you want it badly enough, you’ll find a way to get it and that applies to all areas of life, especially your career.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING A BIG CHANGE LIKE THAT?
Figure out what it is you are truly passionate about. Write a list of goals you want to achieve in that career and draw out a plan or list of steps for how you will work your way there. Make sure these goals are practical for where you are in life at that very moment. The biggest step for me at the beginning was learning how to get comfortable with putting myself out there and being really ambitious. The best way to network and connect with others was through sharing my passion and explaining what it is I dream to do with my career. You never know who this person may know in the business to help you get one step closer to that destination!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF STARTING YOUR BLOG?
There is so much to be thankful for ever since the start of LoSo Fancy. I’ll give you the two most rewarding things. First off, meeting fellow Boston Bloggers has led me to great opportunities and friendships. There is nothing more motivating than surrounding yourself with like-minded ladies who are very business oriented, creatively talented, and crave career success just as much as you do. Secondly, the support of my readers, family and friends has been nothing short of amazing. I’m so flattered and humbled when friends or even strangers will reach out and tell me how inspiring it has been for them to watch my blog grow and how happy they are to see me working towards my dream job. Sweet comments like those make this journey worthwhile.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT?
Any black & white combo with a red lip, statement necklace, or bold colored handbag never fails! Totally doable for any occasion and season.
STYLE WORDS YOU LIVE BY?
K.I.S.S. – Keep It Simple Stupid.
SUMMER WARDROBE NECESSITY?
A big straw sun hat! I love being out in the sun just as much as every other beach bum in New England, but as I get older it’s best to save my face from sun damage (and wrinkles) and keep myself cool underneath a wide brim hat.
