With the New Year just begun, plenty of people are focusing on new diets, work out regimes and other ways to make 2015 their most healthy year yet. And while everyone on our staff has been trying our best, this week we decided to call in an expert to help keep us all inspired! Sarah Baker began her career as a model, but has since founded StyleBodySoul, a company focused on helping women take a well-rounded and holistic approach to leading a healthy life, in both mind and body. She does this through life coaching and wellness retreats, one of which is happening in March in Chicago, entitled Be Healthful: Spring Awakening. We talked to her about her company, her approach to a healthy lifestyle, and how we can find balance too.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I am the founder and president of StyleBodySoul, LLC which is a holistic consulting company that focuses on private coaching (nutrition, holistic health, and lifestyle) and for small businesses & entrepreneurs within the wellness industry (business coaching, special events management, & media relations). I am also the founder and editor of BalancedBabe.com which is a digital publication that is all about living a holistic and, of course, a balanced life! Balanced Babe also hosts a series of retreats and conferences, BeHealthfulRetreat.com, that promotes local businesses and connects them with our health-conscious guests.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU HAVE TO TAKE TO REACH THIS POINT IN YOUR CAREER?
My passion about nutrition research and holistic health was a process that started to take hold when I was in my late teens, but I was always either focused on modeling or acting. Finally, once I lived in a small area in Istanbul and ate nothing but plant-based, fresh and local produce, I realized that I needed to promote this lifestyle in my community. […] That trip turned a light bulb on in my head. I decided then and there that my real passion is to help young girls and women love their bodies and have healthy relationships with food.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING YOU’VE LEARNED THROUGH YOUR JOB?
That not everything will go the way it is planned, and you better be able to adapt quickly! I’ve come across bumps and lumps and all sorts of unexpected obstacles and challenges while being on timelines, but you must not let that get you down and fog your brain from what your goal is. Being able to strategize on how you will realign your situation and carry on is not an easy task, but it can be learned with experience or with the help of a mentor or coach.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT YOUR WORKING IN NUTRITION?
Being able to help people reach their goals! Whether it is with my health coaching or business clients, or from partners and vendors who participate in my retreat. Being able to coach and inspire people who come into my life and get excited when they reach optimal health, success, or attain new leads for their business is really a pure joy for me.
WHAT IS THE TOUGHEST PART?
Trying to manage it all! […] If you can learn how to practice some decent time management skills, you can improve your productivity and stay on track with timelines. One thing that I do is set aside time slots for daily tasks. I focus on 3 major tasks I need to get done for the day and make sure I set aside an hour for each task that day. I also schedule 30 minute increments for other work tasks to make sure I am touching base on all three sectors of Balanced Babe. If you can schedule times to work on various tasks at the beginning of the day it also may help you stay on track.
WHAT ARE A FEW SMALL STEPS PEOPLE CAN TAKE TO LEAD A MORE BALANCED LIFE IN THE NEW YEAR?
Get moving for at least 30 minutes a day (this could be for a stroll outside, cleaning the house, or going to a yoga class). Add one smoothie or juice to your meal plan each day. Try the 80/20 rule: Be mindful how you eat Sunday through Thursday, then indulge over the weekend!
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 TIPS FOR LEADING AN OVERALL HEALTHY LIFE?
Getting enough sleep is important. Keep stress in check. Stress is bad on so many levels and creates inflammation that can wreak havoc on our health silently. And stay active. Exercise keeps us fit and can help us maintain a healthy weight when done regularly.
