Since we’re right in the middle of New York Fashion Week, we thought who better to highlight as today’s woman we love than a Lincoln Center veteran (and Bryant Park before that, of course).
Samantha Lim is the newly appointed (and first-ever) fashion features director at the popular website StyleCaster, where she’s in charge of creating compelling content and Pinterest-worthy editorials. Prior to that, she served as the editor-in-chief of FashionIndie, and she’s also been a freelance stylist and consultant. She has literally attended hundreds of fashion shows and presentations over the seven years she’s been in the industry.
Read on to find out what show Sam looks forward to most each season, what a typical NYFW schedule is like, and whose publicist once pushed her into a bush at an after-party.
THE IMPRESSION IS THAT FASHION WEEK IS THIS BIG, GLAMOROUS EVENT. IS THAT TRUE WHEN YOU’RE GOING TO THE SHOWS FOR WORK?
Ha! Not exactly. It is a stressful, tiring, and competitive week, and you’re expected to look great the entire time. Granted, there is champagne served at almost every event, so I guess that glams it up a little.
HOW MANY SHOWS DO YOU TYPICALLY SEE IN A WEEK?
I once saw 62 shows in a week. That was maybe four years ago. This year, I’ll probably cover a dozen.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU GONE TO FASHION WEEK?
This is my 15th season at New York Fashion Week!
WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIALS OF A GOOD FASHION WEEK OUTFIT?
Stylish shoes that you can actually walk in, a great silhouette, and bold colors or a print.
WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG DURING FASHION WEEK? (AND WHAT BAG IS IT? )
Cliff Bars, my iPhone and iPad and charger, makeup bag, notebook, vitamin C tablets, probably a stack of accessories and random sponsored freebies you pick up throughout the week.
WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO WEAR THIS SEASON?
WARM clothes, its a polar vortex!
WHAT’S THE BEST FASHION WEEK PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO?
In recent years? Brian Atwood’s party at the Four Seasons — chic as sh*t. Kim Kardashian almost fell down the stairs, Heidi Klum’s publicist pushed me into a rose bush, and Ryan Lochte and I hung out for 20 minutes talking about his potential reality show.
WHAT SHOW DO YOU CONSISTENTLY LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING MOST EVERY SEASON?
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE RECENT “BACKLASH” AGAINST BLOGGERS AT FASHION WEEK?
I think the field of fashion reporting is incredibly saturated and so it is hard to really weed through all the different blogs, websites, and magazines and find the people who are really there for the right reasons that are going to do the best kind of reporting for your brand. There’s only so much room for so many people, and brands have to control that. Otherwise their entire season of hard work gets underappreciated.
