Kellen Winters wants to “KAKE” your business and your life. And she has the chops to do it! But what does it mean to get “KAKE”-ed? Don’t worry, Winters has that answer too.
Having worked for companies like CS | Modern Luxury Media and WGN before breaking off on her own to found KAKE, a visual media production house, Winters now uses past expertise and contacts to help her own clients. Her company uses its “optimal visual, digital, and communicative departments to gear your business towards a brighter future.” KAKE, and Winters herself, focus on identifying both the strengths and weaknesses in us all, as people and businesses. From there, it’s just a short KAKE-walk towards honing in on those strengths and overcoming the weaknesses.
We talked about this process with Winters, and along the way learned how she “KAKE-ed” her own career, how she makes the most of every opportunity, and her true feelings about Miley Cyrus…
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME “KAKE” FOR YOUR COMPANY?
I remember I was about eighteen or nineteen when my friends started calling me “KAKES” […] Getting “kake” is also a hip-hop term for monetizing what you do and just working damn hard (e.g. “Vivrant Thing” by Tribe Called Quest). I was always known for my strong work ethic and like to think that I still am today. […] So when it came to naming the business, [KAKE] was the only option that I suggested. I’ve always been a woman of my word.
HOW DO YOU APPLY THE KAKE PHILOSOPHY OF LOOKING TO MAKE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS AND ANALYSIS TO YOUR PERSONAL AND EVERYDAY LIFE?
I am a living representation of my business and KAKE is a complete representation of me. My M.O. for life is to work hard and just keep it real. […] KAKE has allowed me to take great pride in my mind, body, and energy as a leader and successful woman. That said, I never stop climbing and lifting and aiming to achieve new goals and break a lot of personal barriers I’ve struggled with over the years. Life is always going to pull the rug from underneath us, but at the end of the day we just have to stay centered and keep moving.
HOW DO YOU RECOMMEND OTHERS TAKE THOSE FIRST STEPS TOWARDS IMPROVEMENT, WHETHER PERSONAL OR PROFESSIONAL?
Everything begins and ends with turning inward. Any sort of improvement starts with listening to what your heart is telling you to do and to go with that. It sounds corny, but doing so makes living so much simpler. You’ll find yourself having apologized less frequently if you do what you want and say what you feel. Life in its most pure essence is stepping outside of what feels warm and fluffy.
WHAT GOES INTO PLANNING A SUCCESSFUL EVENT?
Solid events are laden in good planning and staying organized. Whenever we put on events, we use our “KAKE Event Checklist(s)” that guides us and keeps our clients/team in line, along with the “KAKE Survival Kit” we created for last minute emergencies at events. This way, there’s no question as to what is supposed to happen next, or who is responsible for what.
WHO IS A DREAM BRAND CLIENT YOU’D LIKE TO WORK WITH IN THE FUTURE?
I’d love to work alongside Pharrell Williams and Nigo Sake […] The KAKE aesthetic is very much inspired by those two, and they’ve always really floored me with their work as a collective unit. I’d probably keel over and die first, though.
WHO IS A CELEBRITY YOU’D LOVE TO GIVE A “KAKE”-STYLE MAKEOVER TO?
Miley could use sure a good KAKE hose down…
WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE COMPANY?
I like to stay grounded and present with the realities of KAKE. I will say that it’s hard not to imagine a 50-60 person office, though. We’re certainly en route.
