At 17, she launched a line of tees and polos to promote self-esteem in young girls. At 18, she launched Superstar Nail Lacquer, a couture nail polish line with fans like Selena Gomez and Lauren Conrad. Since then, she’s been featured in VOGUE, Glamour, Us Weekly and more. And today, Ariana Pierce is our Women We Love! This self-titled “fashionpreneur” chats with us this week about her steps to success, what is on her shopping list, and how she keeps her blog organized…
FIRST, TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOB!
I like to call myself a Fashionpreneur, because I mix fashion and entrepreneurship for a living. I own a Nail Lacquer brand, Superstar Nail Lacquer, which has opened the door for me to become a style expert and blogger.
YOU’VE PARTNERED WITH SOME AMAZING BRANDS! HOW DO YOU FIND AND CULTIVATE THESE PARTNERSHIPS?
As a style expert and blogger, working with brands didn’t come easy. Some people think that if you are a blogger, that means that you will get free clothes and shoes. Well, that’s definitely not the case. I started by writing out a list of brands I wanted to partner with. Once that list was created, I didn’t go on a spree to contact them; I just perfected my styling and blog. This happened by being consistent and putting out quality content. The brands began to take notice of my work and blog and wanted to partner with me. I decided which ones best suited my overall brand image and it’s been a great adventure to work with them.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING YOU’VE LEARNED IN YOUR CAREER?
The biggest thing I’ve learned in my career is to keep your next move quiet until things are set in stone. There have been times in the past where I would announce a new project or style segment that I would be doing and it fell through. If I would have waited until things were set, then I would have avoided those embarrassing moments. I’ve learned to protect my brand by being patient and thinking through the entire process.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?
The best part of my job is waking up every day knowing that I get to pursue my passion and work with lots of creative entrepreneurs. It has allowed me to travel the world and capture beauty through the lens of my camera. Because I am so passionate about what I do, it never feels like work.
WHAT IS THE TOUGHEST PART?
I would say being so young in a mature industry. Sometimes I would have meetings with fashion and beauty execs who were 3x my age. It would definitely be intimidating, and they treated me as if I didn’t know what I was doing because I was so young. I couldn’t let that back me down, so I had to get on my A-game. I learned my industry in-and-out. I did my research and matured so that when getting in front of this crowd, I could be confident!
WHAT IS ON YOUR SHOPPING WISH LIST RIGHT NOW?
I’ve created a work and reward system that when I reach a certain goal, I’ll pick up one of the items from my wish list.
HOW DO YOU MIX HIGH AND LOW TO CREATE A SIGNATURE LOOK?
Mixing high and low is so fun! You don’t have to spend a million bucks to look good. I’ve mixed a piece from Forever 21 with a designer bag and the outfit was a hit. There’s no excuse, looking good comes down to style, not how much you spend on an item. When I mix high and low, I tend to have a designer bag since I feel like that’s one of the first things people notice. Next, I mix in low items whether it’s my top or bottom. Having a great shoe is always ideal to taking your look to the next level as well.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO WORK IN FASHION?
I would say start by getting a plan. Create a vision board for what it is you want to do. Do you want to be a fashion designer, a stylist, or an editor? Whatever it is, get pictures and words to paste down on your board. It’s important to do this because it’s a proven fact that what you focus on daily becomes your reality.
Next, I would say get products and books to help you become an expert in your field. An expert is someone who consistently delivers quality content to their audience. You are able to do this by staying organized which means getting a planner. That’s why I created the Superstar Chic Fashion Planner for those who want and need help planning their blog posts, social media postings, product launches and daily wardrobe. It’s a great tool that will keep you productive and creative as you pursue a career in fashion.
