I love the idea behind the site! How did you come up with the concept?
The idea struck me while I was sitting in the center of a craft project gone wrong. I was trying to make thank you cards for my wedding. Inspired by Pinterest, I went to the craft store and bought everything I needed (or so I thought). Hundreds of dollars and several hours in, I had my first thank you card. It looked like the work of a 4-year-old (no offense 4-year-olds!). I thought why can’t this be easier… why isn’t there something connecting those amazing ideas on Pinterest to the supplies I need to make them myself. And so I decided, I’ll make it easier and I quit my job and began to build Darby Smart.
We live in such a Pinterest-y generation. How does the site play off of this idea and take it to the next level?
I think it exposes DIY inspiration to millions of people. Crafting has always been a huge market but before sites like Pinterest it was very independent. You made something and had no outlet to share. Now, via Pinterest, we can both find new ideas and share our own.
How can people use DIY projects in entertaining without making the process more of a hassle?
Two incredible ways… One, create pieces for your home because they make incredible conversation starters. Your guests will compliment a piece and you’ll be able to talk about how you made it! The second is to make DIY part of the entertainment. Host a craft party with one of Darby Smart’s Girls Night Out Boxes . . . it’s the Modern Ladies Book Club. Or, have a larger group activity, like create your own terrarium or design your own wine glass. These are quick 10 minute projects that create fun conversations.
What are your summer party plans for entertaining?
There are so many moments in the summer to host people. We’re having a wine stomping party (not sure we’ll actually drink the vino that we make!), a pot painting party and a Make Your Own Gin Contest .. you get to design the bottle and all.
What are some tips and tricks you have for throwing a great summer event?
1) Think about your guest list. I think it’s all about getting the right mix of people together.
2) Have noteworthy food and drinks. Come up with cute apps like mini-cronuts and a signature drink.
3) Give folks something to do! People love conversation starters. Set up a backyard game of croquet or a Make Your Own Martini Bar.
What can we expect from you in the future?
We’ll continue to propel the “Maker’s Movement” by launching more DIYs across a bunch of new categories. Right now we have home decor and women’s accessories and we just launched wedding. Next up…you might see some really fantastic foodie DIYs!
