Every girl (if she’ll admit it or not) loves to get pampered in the beauty department. Whether it’s an indulgent facial, relaxing pedicure or fun new hairstyle, we have the right to feel pretty! And thanks to the trend of blowdry bars that is sweeping Chicago there are more places than ever to get a quick style for your big meeting, night out or hot date. A blowdry bar we are loving right now is Blowout Junkie, co-founded by friends Dora Stojka, Tina Pawlak, Nicole Karkalis. These women are seriously stylish, and we loved hearing their advice for working with a friend, being an entrepreneur and being fashionable in Chicago…
HOW DID YOU START IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?
Blowout Junkie is our first venture into the beauty industry but we have always loved fashion and all things beauty. But, we have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and knew we wanted to do something together. Nicole came up with the idea of a blow dry/style bar and we loved it!
HOW DID YOU GO FROM THE IDEA OF BLOWOUT JUNKIE TO THE FINAL COMPANY?
One step at a time. It started with a high level idea, we took the next step, met people in the industry, talked to more people, took the next step, and so on. The hardest part in any venture is taking the first step.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER BLOW DRY BARS?
We pride ourselves on keeping it fresh and staying on top of the latest trends. We travel often to different cities to see what styles are trending. We love bringing the latest trends to the beautiful women of Chicago!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE CHICAGO STYLE AND BEAUTY SCENE?
We live and breathe Chicago style and think Chicago women are so very stylish. Chicago women understand that it’s important to look professional at work (which is why our 7 am appointments are always booked) and let your hair down (no pun intended) in the evenings and weekends.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS IN THE CITY?
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Building this business together. We are very close and it’s such a great feeling to bring our ideas to fruition. We each have different backgrounds; Dora has an accounting/finance background, Tina in sales and marketing and Nicole with management of operations. We always have different perspectives on things. Clearly, we couldn’t have done it all alone!
AND THE TOUGHEST?
Most of our stylists are young women, just starting out in their career and we strive to be good role models. We always try to do the right thing! Its’ not just about building a business, but being a supportive mentor.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
Don’t give up! Trust us, we have had our ups and downs in our business, but every time something doesn’t work we go back to the drawing board and try again.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE LOOKING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Understand your own strengths and areas where you could use help and ask for the help. Most businesses need more than one person to make it happen, and that’s totally okay.
AND FOR WORKING WITH A FRIEND?
With friends or family, you have to always treat each other with respect. When we are having a business meeting we keep it professional, always. When we are at a family gathering, we are sisters and try not to talk business (unless of course there is something really exciting that we need to talk about!)
