Sometimes blogging is really freaking cool. Like when you reconnect with an old high school acquaintance because you’ve been creepishly following along on her unbelievable entrepreneurial success story, and ask her to write about it. And then you talk a little, realize that not only is this chick wildly ambitious and accomplished, but she’s a girl with a heart that is so genuinely and recklessly dedicated to helping others. To put it lightly, it’s incredibly rare. And it’s also incredibly inspiring.
And the funny thing about Angie Lee, is that’s what she turned her passion into: inspiring others. There are some people that are good at what they do because they’re dedicated, passionate and disciplined enough to pursue it tirelessly. And then there are those who are just clearly a natural at what they have chosen to do.
And finally there are those few and far in-between people that combine an insane work ethic with their uncanny natural ability. Those are the ones who are unstoppable. And Angie Lee, without a doubt, won’t stop until she has inspired each and every one of us.
Here’s what I know: you’re a badass business coach with a heck of a background in health and fitness. What does that mean?
Huge thank you! I am a business strategist for female entrepreneurs. I teach women how to launch and grow their online health coaching business. After building Angie Lee Health for 7 years, I decided to finally follow my passion for business coaching. I’m the catalyst for women who are ready to leave the corporate world and finally create a business they love. My niche coaching is for Health Coaches ready to create their first 5k or 10k months. I coach them through the launch and growth stages of their brand.
What experience did you have prior to your current role that allowed you to be ready to take on the biz coaching world?
Along with owning Angie Lee Health for 7 years, I’ve always been fascinated with marketing and sales. I discovered my gift for branding at a young age and knew that I would eventually transition into the business development space. I began teaching women how to start their blogs and social platforms. Next thing you know, I was packed with clients! Kinda crazy, but a blessing! Building my own business from the ground up truly taught me invaluable skills on what it REALLY takes to own a business and what social media skills were necessary. I did study business and broadcast journalism in college, so it’s a bit funny that those skills are coming back to me now in this new business. I’m living out my real life MBA every single day. It’s the hardest thing I’ll ever do, but my business is my baby and always worth it. I wouldn’t change it for the world.
What does your day-to-day schedule look like in your current entrepreneurial role?
Every day is different for me, but I always make sure 7-10 am is my “Angie” time. This is when I read personal development books, meditate, workout, go to yoga and take time to set my intentions. I’m a firm believer in setting up each day with a successful & abundant mindset and taking time to take care of YOU, before you can serve others. When you are a coach, you must take care of your greatest commodity—yourself! From 10am-1pm I will usually film videos or create content for my clients. This is when I focus on vlogging, blogging and writing. I also check in with my intern, assistant and team at this time. At 1pm I will usually go for a short walk or bike ride to refresh my brain. From 2-5/6 I schedule my Skype Calls with my private clients. I stop working no later than 7pm. Setting work boundaries has been something I’ve recently built in my business and I love it.
How did you transition from a regular 9 to 5, to owning your own businesses?
I was working on my blog while I was a freshman in college. I continued blogging and building my brand while working in corporate. I spent every moment of extra time (after work and weekends) to focus on building my website and blog. Determined to leave the cubicle, I hustled to build my online clients. I focused on building my following, and after 2 years, left my 9-5. It took two years to triple my income from corporate and work from home.
How did you get started in the health and fitness industry? What ultimately made you transition from being a Health Coach into a Business Coach?
I was a gymnast and athlete growing up. My love for the human body inspired me to study nutrition in college and become a personal trainer. Shortly after, I became a certified nutritionist and started my own training and consulting company. I knew I didn’t want to become an RD, so I built my nutrition consulting business while in classes.
Honestly, the transition was on my mind for the last year, but I had to wait for the perfect time to organically transition. My own coaches and mentors helped me identify my goals, and business coaching kept coming up as my long term vision. It was difficult to leave part of my identity. Angie Lee Health will always be one of my kids that I love. But my gut, heart and soul was clearly telling me that this is my zone of genius. I will always love helping women with their health – BUT helping a woman leave a soul sucking job and create a business she loves is PRICELESS. It’s the greatest feeling in the world for me right now to be helping female entrepreneurs.
You have achieved so much in such a short period of time: do you have any career crushes that have inspired you along the way?
Two words: Chalene Johnson. Haha, but seriously! she’s absolutely my crush and goal. There are several mentors and women who have inspired me along the way, but Chalene is truly the epitome of an incredible female entrepreneur. She’s rocking the health and business space like no other.
What is the most solid career advice you’ve ever received?
To stop waiting for the conditions to be perfect to launch your business. Successful businesses are made in the mud. You don’t have to be perfect, you just need to get started.
As a business coach, what is the most important advice you would impart on a client?
To be consistent as heck. Show up every single day as if your business is your baby. Nurture it on the good days and the bad days.
You have an expansive (and so personable!) presence on social media- what are some of your cardinal rules when using social media platforms to expand your business?
Four rules I always keep in mind are to be authentic, consistent, professional and valuable. Social media is the platform for me to connect with my audience and provide value. I consistently remind myself that I must provide exceptional value, every single day. I also love showing women that yes I am serious in my business, but I am also real, goofy and imperfect.
I’m sure the success hasn’t happened without some setbacks. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge is keeping your “why” at the forefront of every day. You have to take several financial risks as an entrepreneur, and although every risk was worth it, it’s still scary. No one sees the unsexy realities of uncertainty. It’s also been difficult to sacrifice a lot of my social life to create my business. Setbacks are inevitable and I keep a great attitude regardless. My business is a blast and you need to have fun to power through the hard times!
Has networking played a role in your success? If so, what are some of your tips for effective networking?
Networking has been HUGE. It’s the secret sauce! I’m constantly connecting with other women in my industry and other industries. My biggest tip with networking is 1. Be bold and 2. Always ask “how I can help YOU?” Serving others will always pay off.
