You know her as the first woman to star on Bravo’s hit TV show ‘Million Dollar Listing,’ and she has sold some of the flashiest and priciest homes in the country. But even off camera, Samantha DeBianchi is a force to be reckoned with. You can learn from her expertise thanks to her coaching website, as well as her upcoming webinar series and (whoa!) first book. But since we can never get enough of a good boss lady, Sam also talked with us about her professional successes, business strategy, and ways to add more oomph to our homes.
HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR WAY INTO REAL ESTATE?
I always had a sixth sense for business. My family always had investment properties. My parents always instilled in me the importance of buying a home, and they educated me in real estate. I decided to get my license. I knew going in, like with most things I do, I had to be the best. I continue to educate myself about the latest and greatest of what’s going on.
AND THEN HOW DID YOU GROW YOUR BUSINESS INTO SUCH A FORCE?
I’m the type of person where average is not okay. The 9-5 and doing 5 deals a year is not who I am. Being a force to be reckoned with is not who I became, but something I’ve always been. It’s the only way to go in business and in life.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE LOOKING TO GROW THEIR BUSINESS?
My best piece of advice to grow your business is to understand that you’re going to hear ‘no’ way more than you’re going to hear ‘yes.’ Know how to push past all the negativity and believe in yourself. Believe you are the best. The other piece of advice I offer business owners is make sure everyone knows you are the best and the only one worth doing business with. Make your name synonymous with what you do so when people have a need for your specialty, you are the first person they think of.
WHAT IS YOUR STRATEGY TO SUCCESS?
I’m very genuine. It’s important to know you can’t get every single client. Not everyone is going to like you and that’s okay. I have a strict policy that I work with people I want to work with. If we don’t mesh, I don’t want to force that relationship. I also try to showcase my strengths. I’m good at educating people in real estate. I don’t throw everything at the wall. I emphasize my strengths.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR BEING A STRONG WOMAN IN THE WORKPLACE?
You can’t go in with the mentality that you have it harder because you’re a woman. Don’t restrict yourself mentally like that. Realize that there is so much opportunity out there whether you are male or female.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Meeting new people constantly. Every day is new and exciting. It can be a rollercoaster, ups and downs, but it’s all exciting. There are so many different aspects of real estate. You get to be creative and analytical. You can make as much or as little money as you want. It’s up to you.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A BALANCE OF PROFESSIONAL AND TV LIVES?
A lot of people don’t realize that when I go on TV, it’s for no more than 4 minutes at a time usually. When I’m doing an interview on CNBC or Fox Business, I love being able to serve as that expert voice and helping the millions of people out there buying and selling homes. Being on TV is also important because it leads to a lot of business. But one thing I promise all my clients: No matter how much TV I do, I will always respond. When I’m on other shows, even though we’re filming, I have my phone attached to me. Business still happens. We did a full year of filming for Million Dollar Listing, and I never missed a beat from work.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK AND PERSONAL LIVES?
I incorporate a lot of my personal life into my business life. It might not be what the experts say, but it works for me because I love what I do. It’s also important to turn off the business person though. Go for a run. Play tennis. Go shopping. Do whatever it is you like to do. I’m passionate about my hobbies of interior design, running and yoga.
HOW DO YOU DRESS PROFESSIONALLY YET FASHIONABLY FOR WORK?
Get a good hair person and makeup artist. On TV, have a pro handle you. Know your colors. Know what you look good in. Always be prepared.
WHAT ARE EASY TIPS TO MAKE OUR HOMES LOOK MORE FASHIONABLE?
- Change out fixtures. Crystal fixtures can glam up a house in a simple way without breaking the bank.
- Add plants. Natural looking plants and flowers brighten up rooms.
- Replace a lightbulb and add more light to your space. Many people come short on the wattage their fixtures can handle. Don’t be afraid to brighten it up.
- Artwork. Art can add so much color and drama to a room.
- Take a picture of your room and go to your favorite store. Ask for advice, but don’t come in unprepared.
