April is here and spring has sprung, so it’s time to show a little skin. But while the nights are still cool, it’s all right to show that skin indoors, and take in the latest play to hit your city! Going to the theatre always feels like a luxurious experience, and in Chicago that luxury takes a sexy turn with the stage production of Venus in Fur at the Goodman Theatre. No matter what play you go to, you have to dress the part, and I have some tips to bring out the Venus inside us all…
Venus in Fur is the newest play to hit the Chicago theatre scene from New York, and comes with rave reviews from publications as varied as Vogue, Entertainment Weekly and the New York Times. From Chicago playwright David Ives, this is a sexy story of love and power, and the constant relationship between the two. It is based on a 1869 novella that centers around an auditioning actress, Vanda, and her director Thomas as she tries out for a part in an erotic play. As you might imagine, sparks certainly fly!
Now, we at L&C love an excuse to dress up, so a night at the theatre is the perfect opportunity! No matter what play you’re attending this season, you want to look your best, but for a sexy play like Venus in Fur, you have to show a little skin! This is not the time or the play for which you should be coy. The key is to balance the flirty nature of the plot with the chic drama of the stage.
If you want to go high-impact, a floor length dress in this season’s “metals” trend is the way to go. A deep v-neck front keeps it from being too covered up, and allows you to either wear your hair flowing free or pulled back in a tight chignon. I love cage high heels with the look and this sleek clutch.
Other options of dresses from Free People and Jay Godfrey are also great choices, as is this Topshop midi skirt. And with any of them you can throw on this blazer (voted “Best Bang for Your Buck” by Refinery29) as a chic cover-up.
Because theaters sometimes can get chilly, I often choose a fun pant outfit instead. I love these Amanda Wakeley pants in red for spring and summer. Wide leg is a great, and very comfortable, alternative to the ever popular skinny silhouette, and if you’re going to be sitting in a play for a while, you’ll love that extra leg room. Plus, a little red would be very Vanda of you.
Pair those pants with this amazing (and so affordable) tuxedo vest to add balance and give a little extra oomph! to your outfit. You could also go for this jacket from Zara if you want to keep your arms covered.
I’ll be checking out the play this weekend, and have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity since tickets went on sale earlier this year. The Goodman is an iconic Chicago feature and to see such a sparkling play there will be a real treat. I can’t wait to bring some dramatic fashion out for a night at the theatre!
As Ives said about Venus in Fur, “The novella crackles with the friction of two buttoned-up people in an erotic power play; that sure sounded dramatic to me.”
And to that I say – See you at the theatre!
