We’ve all heard about 14, 21, and even 28-day detoxifying cleanses. But, most of these plans (sadly) include mile-long grocery lists, complicated recipes, expensive supplements, and an amount of rest that is all but impossible for those of us with demanding careers. With this in mind, I set out to see if I could capture the main benefits of a rigorous detox program in just 24 hours.
This is not a joke! If you’re a busy professional like me, the thought of setting aside almost a month to do nothing but sip kale juice and attend twice-daily yin yoga classes is out of reach. So, I blocked out a day in Google calendar, and took the following steps in the hopes of achieving Zen in one day:
The first move in your detox day is to treat yourself to a great night of sleep. The night before, you’ll want to turn in as early as you can so you can nix the alarm clock and wake up naturally. Your goal should be at least eight or nine hours of non-interrupted rest. Goals: Wear your cutest pajamas, throw on an eye mask and dream of a warm, sandy beach.
After your gentle wake up, head over to your local spa for a late morning massage, facial, or favorite restorative treatment. Be sure to get there with plenty of time to spare so you can spend a few moments relaxing, listening to calming music, and drinking lemon-cucumber water in the waiting lounge. I visited Bliss Spa in Chicago, where you get breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and can read any magazine you could ever want while you wait. Be sure to take your time and enjoy the quiet aromatherapy of the space.
Pro tip: Turn off your phone upon arrival and keep it off as long as you can for a true break from your busy life.
After your relaxing spa experience, head to a calm café for a light and healthy lunch. I prefer to follow my spa appointment with a protein-packed sashimi platter, or a colorful salad with fresh in-season vegetables. You’ll want to choose a place that isn’t too hectic so you can sit and peacefully stare out the window.
Pro tip: Keep that phone off and resist the urge to Instagram every step of your day!
After lunch, I recommend heading home for some quiet time on your favorite overstuffed armchair with a fresh-brewed cup of tea. Tea is not only good for you, but it provides a great amount of much needed post-spa hydration. I recommend Kusmi Tea’s “Anastasia,” with exotic Earl Grey black tea, lemon and orange blossom. Even better: the tea’s lovely label says “Paris,” which can’t help but make you smile.
Your last stop for a 24-hour detox is a soothing and simple yoga class. Be sure to select an introductory level class such as an easy flow vinyasa or restorative hatha yoga that is lower in intensity. That way, you can stretch and calm your muscles to make that mind and body connection you’ve been working on all day. Savor child’s pose and simple twists, and truly meditate during shavasana so that you’ll be in prime shape to wind down your day.
Before concluding your detox, jot down a few things you’re grateful for. Gratitude is the perfect way to refresh your mind, and goes well with your now refreshed body and soul. After your 24-hour detox, you can be thankful for the all the rest you got, the soothing spa experience you felt, and the healthy food and tea you tried. Keep the rest of your night quiet, and you’ll wake up tomorrow feeling reset and restored after just one day.
