Since the release of Fifth Harmony’s summer girl anthem, working from home has taken quite a popular turn in today’s pop culture society. But, sadly, it’s not always all it’s cracked up to be in the music videos. There are plenty of perks (hello legging life!) but in order to keep your work life thriving and your home life in order, we have your best tricks to make working from home a breeze…
SET UP YOUR SPACE
When you work from home, you need to learn best practices like setting “office hours” that coincide with the rest of your team or boss, and having a dedicated office space. This will help you avoid home-bound distractions, and make sure your “work” life doesn’t spill over into your “home” life. Because as much as you want to make your office organized, one of the double edged swords of working from home is just that. Your work and home should always be kept separate, so each one can be its own sanctuary.
You also have to keep your home looking spiffy too! We love this sleek and simple desk from One Kings Lane for almost any style home. Another option, that’s newly on sale, is a great option for a more vintage home.
“COMMUTE” TO WORK
Your work space should not be in your bed, or even really in your room. Make yourself get up each morning and actually get dressed as if you were going to an office. This will help keep your mindset sharp and focused. Even if it means changing out of PJs and into leggings, that act of “getting dressed for work” sets a start to your day.
And make a morning coffee run! It’s easy to forget to stop for java when you can roll from the sheets right to the laptop, but most people’s days don’t start until they’ve had some caffeine. And now, thanks to brands like Starbucks, you can have the full coffee bar experience right in your kitchen. There are easy steps to take for classic coffees like an Iced Pour Over that would be similar to their new drink (and our current favorite menu item) the Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew.
KEEP IT CLEAN
Start your day with a daily plan of attack! Though you might not be in an office, you can still use their practices like a filing system, organized schedule and to do lists. Schedule your day into time slots based off of a to do list (this one is a personal favorite) to make sure you’re maximizing your time.
Also keep your technology clean! I have become obsessed with the Well Kept Screen Cleaning Towelettes, and keep them in my work bag all the time. You can use them to easily clean your phone screens, computer screens and key pads, and even your desk top area.
SIMPLE PRODUCTS, EASY SOLUTIONS
Whether you’re an Apple person or a PC fan, a tablet makes work from home life simpler! You can easily bring it to a coffee shop for meetings, or to different rooms in the house. Plus with new technology, tablets know have great photo editing software, add on keyboards and more.
If you’re going to create your own filing system and office schedule, you need a sleek and easy printer. The HP DeskJet 3755 is both small and affordable, plus it’s cute! Standing literally as tall as your phone, you can connect via your phone, computer or tablet to print. And it’s only $69.99!
Then keep your files backed-up, and your computer hard drive clear, with a sleek external hard drive.
One of the best parts about working from home is that you do have flexibility! So, for as much as there are plenty of necessary ways to keep your work organized, don’t feel like you are chained to your desk. In an office, you would still take coffee breaks, or stretch your legs…and you can do that at home too! Go out to lunch once and a while, or take a break to walk the dog. It will actually help you re-focus and attack your next project.
Those who work from home have so much “working” for them…so take advantage of that!
