Before you even arrive, you can tell that your weekend is going to be a relaxing one with nature. Winding roads for miles off the highway led us up hills and around a bend before opening up onto The Goldmoor Inn. Little cottages and an expansive patio greeted us as we pulled into the circle drive and unpacked, ready for romantical times.
When you check in, you’ll be shown to one of the eighteen suites or cottages, all of which are expansive but still cozy! The fun names like the First Lady Suite and French Country Cottage made us feel fancy even before we stepped foot in our own room, The Lancelot Suite. If you’re lucky enough to book one of the turret suites, you’ll be the unofficial “King and Queen” of the hotel for your stay.
Aside from being a great spot to celebrate the most love-centric holiday, the inn hosts weddings, proposals and even elopements! It would be a great spot to host your wedding party, or for a bridal shower weekend, because you would be able to host your whole group in one location while still having room for personalized fun.
Another unique room, a favorite of our team, is the Chef’s Quarters, which can only be accessed through the kitchen. You’ll walk a few steps through the kitchen every time you go to and from your room, meaning you can smell tasty treats like homemade soups, brunch items or dinner classics like an epic pork chop (below) being prepared by the inn’s culinary team.
If you decide to make the trip a group couple’s escape, you can also dine in the kitchen at the Chef’s Table. Front and center in the heart of the kitchen, this would be the perfect experience for Chicago foodies. For smaller groups or couples, dining in the main dining room like we did is still a warm and welcoming experience.
Day activities in the area range from hiking trails to snow shoeing to shopping downtown. Or you can knock back some drinks at The Blaum Brothers Distilling Co., a local distillery with a wide range of spirits. We took the tour, and tasted some cocktails, and loved the local feel and totally reasonable prices at the location. Our tour guide was funny and informative, and yes Virginia, there is a gift shop.
One of our favorites was their Blaum Bros. Gin, which was smooth enough to drink on ice, but had tasteful juniper flavors that also made it great for cocktails. We also picked up a bottle of their Blaum Bros. Hellfyre, a seriously spicy liquor perfect for Bloody Mary’s.
After drinking and dining and exploring, we spent a cozy night in by the fire. There are several wine bars and fun restaurants in town, but work with the Goldmoor team to book a cab ride home, as many of the roads are unlit leading to the inn. Safety first! All in all, the Galena destination provides a nice balance of activity and relaxation, all of which is hidden away from the craziness of city life.
