From Beyonce to the Kardashian sisters to Megan Fox, celebrities are known and envied for their long flowing locks. But not all of us can have such a stunning head of hair naturally…and most celebs don’t either! They have long relied on a (not-so-secret) little secret for extra length and body, and we decided to jump on the trend! So, we tried it: hair extensions.
Since my only experience with extensions was an ill-fated personal attempt with beauty store supplies during my high school years, I decided to go to the professionals this time around. Studio 110 Salon in Chicago is my new favorite escape from the city, and their team was more than welcoming and helpful!
Thanks to them, I now know that getting extensions is actually a pretty simple, three step process:
The first appointment is just for chatting and planning. I stopped over at Studio 110 Salon and met with Tina (who is going to be my stylist from now on!) and talked about what I wanted from my extensions. Because I was on somewhat of a budget, and already had longer hair, we decided to go with a limited amount of extensions to add body, not length, to my hair.
Tina gave me a number of extension type options and then helped choose a shade that matched my hair perfectly. We then set a date a few weeks later, giving Tina time to order the extensions.
At our second appointment, I got the full salon treatment! Starting with a shampoo and conditioner, Tina then blew my hair straight and carefully applied the smaller extension pieces in the various layers of my hair. She finished by trimming the ends and blending the extensions so they were seamlessly a part of my own hair!
I couldn’t wash my hair for 48 hours after initial application and always brushed carefully after the shower from then on. The extensions certainly held curl better than my natural hair, but with any heat appliance I had to be careful not to get them too close to the glue binding base of the extension.
After about six weeks, I’ll be going back into the salon chair today to say goodbye (sadly) to my extensions this afternoon. But you can re-use them up to three times if you want! This makes the investment much more worth while, and means you can have four months of Carrie Underwood-like locks overall.
All in all I loved the extra oomph in my ponytail and the extensions looked totally natural! People kept asking me what I’d done to my hair, and then everyone wanted to hunt for the extensions. It’s a fun and semi-permanent way to give yourself an updated look.
