My only juice cleanse experience was a feeble attempt at the Master Cleanse my freshman year of college when my best friend and I decided that it was the only way to get ready for summer. It lasted all of six hours before we were back to a solid diet of pizza and froyo (hey it was freshman year after all!)
With summer starting (and my trip to Costa Rica getting closer and closer), I figured now was a better time than ever to commit to a juice cleanse and finally get some use out of the juicer I purchased on a whim at Williams Sonoma last year.
Since juice cleanses tend to be on the expensive side, I decided to make the juices at home instead of buying them. I researched a few different DIY cleanses but decided to try this version of the Blue Print cleanse with a few of my own tweaks.
Here is my version of the juices:
While the cleanse is usually 3 days long, I didn’t want to overdo it, so I started out with a two day cleanse instead. Most people prepare for a few days beforehand, but I usually tend to eat on the healthier side so I wasn’t too worried. I decided to try it on a Sunday, since I figured the first day would be the hardest, and didn’t plan too much to do that day.
I followed the menu above with an extra green juice added in after the 2nd juice (the apple, mint, and pineapple). It was actually a lot easier than I thought to satisfy my hunger with just the juices. The only one I struggled with was the Spicy Lemonade. I’m normally not big on anything spicy (I even cringe at the thought of mild salsa) so this one was definitely the hardest. Surprisingly, my favorite had to be the green juice. It tasted like a healthy version of my favorite salad, and was a refreshing boost to the day.
Since I hadn’t planned too much to do on the first day, I felt pretty great and wasn’t craving anything too crazy. The second day was definitely harder, starting my Monday morning off without my favorite latte was a challenge in itself, but I made sure to drink a lot of water to make up for it. I definitely noticed myself lagging by the second afternoon, and I wasn’t able to finish the Nut Milk at the end of the night– you could say I was feeling pretty juiced out at that point.
The day after the cleanse I made sure to eat small meals with lots of fruits and veggies. I actually noticed myself craving some of the juices, and I definitely felt more of an urge to resist the candy jar at work.
All in all, the cleanse was a pretty positive experience and I would definitely recommend it. It kicked my healthy eating into gear and I noticed a big difference in my energy, not to mention my skin was looking pretty great (hellloo healthy glow).
…Now on to the 3 day cleanse!
