This month at L&C we are all about getting out and trying new things, especially if those new “things” are actually vacation destinations perfect for a gorgeous sunny day! But it’s important to still adventure safely, and that is especially true when it comes to protecting our skin. So when we found the Helen Kaminski line of beach hats and bags with a UPF of 50+, we knew we had to learn more about this sun-safe but totally stylish line of summertime accessories…
From Blake Lively to Resse Witherspoon to Angeline Jolie, stars have been turing to Helen Kaminski for over twenty-five years as a way to provide “subtle sophistication” to their vacation and everyday style. I chatted with Charlotte Dyslin, the Sales and Vice President of North America/Europe for the Australia-founded company, about the brand’s summer offerings. Here’s what I found out.
This fashion is functional.
There are few things chicer than a wide-brimmed sun hat. But many of the items in the Helen Kaminski line not only physically block your face from the sun, they feature a UPF of 50+, which is the highest sun protection rating given. From wide-brim hats and fedoras, even visors, there are plenty of options to get sun protection without sacrificing style. This is very important for the brand, who know their target market is on the move quite a bit.
“Our customer is a global traveler and making it easy to take their hat or hats along where ever he or she is traveling is a necessity,” Dyslin says.
This is also emphasized in her own personal definition of summer style, which she says is all about having the right essence of “cool, comfortable, contemporary and sophisticated” style.
It’s the perfect pop of color.
Summer is the season of color, but those colors are best found in your closet, not on your face. Which is good because these hats come in all sorts of shades. Dyslin loves the “sherbet and rich jade combinations” as well as the combination of “spicy colors like sienna, tango and flame,” found in the SS14 line. But, if brights aren’t your thing, even in the summer, the line also has something for more classic women, including their “Reel Time Tribute” theme (my personal favorite) which is a geometric and dramatic ode to 1950s Hollywood glamour.
Celebs including Cindy Crawford and Nicole Kidman have worn Kaminski-ware on vacation, so you know it’s a stylish bet, but it’s also designed for ease and convenience.
“I love the raffia beach bag for daytime and a raffia clutch for evening – you can fill the beach bag with all essentials you need at your fingertips while on your way to your destination,” Dyslin says.
As for the hats? They roll up, so you can stash them pretty much anywhere. “Remember to roll and pack a hat or two for on and off the beach – they take very little space in your luggage when they are rolled and stored in their protective covers!”
Not only is Helen Kaminski fashionable, functional and looking out for your complexion, it is also sustainable! In 2007, the brand was recognized for its commitment by the Fashion Group International and the brand was also awarded the FGI Sustainable Design award.
“Sustainability and craftsmanship were mainstays of the Helen Kaminski brand ethos long before these principles became de-riguer for luxury brands” Dyslin says, adding, “Helen Kaminski still continues to work with local manufacturing communities to improve the lives of workers and their families, and remains committed to keeping centuries old traditions of craftsmanship and culture alive.”
So by using old school craftsmanship with new school additions like an added SPF, the brand is preserving iconic glamour but keeping your skin safe on vacation. Love it.
