While it’s storming across the nation, the summer heat and humidity has already begun to take its toll on our beauty routines. From runny make-up to hair falling flat midway through the work day, it can be hard to look stylish in summer! SoI took a (salon) seat with the experts at George the Salon in Chicago to get easy hairstyles for those sweltering days when you’re always on the move but want to look flawless.
George the Salon is a gem in the Windy City that has celebrity fans like Cindy Crawford and a staff that is beyond talented! Up above the street in the River North neighborhood the salon is an escape from the bustling street below with a hands on staff who was attentive to my needs and long list of questions on how to keep my updos up and my curls bouncy this season. I worked with the one of their head stylists Dae (above right) on looks even I could master.
He showed me three styles that will take you from the office to happy hour and back to work the next day, all while keeping your hair looking fresh even in the most humid of climates.
To start your first day, Dae recommends starting with loose curls that can gracefully fall throughout the day without ending up flat. Shampoo and lightly condition your hair before blowing dry in curlers. Too much conditioner can weight your hair down, and by combining curlers with the heat of the blow dryer you can more staying power.
Finish the curls with multiple sizes of curling irons. By varying the size of the curls you get a more natural bounce, and it’s less obvious if the humidity kills some of the curl.
If you’re meeting friends out for dinner after work, you’ll of course want to update your look! So in addition to throwing on heels and taking off that cardigan, Dae also has a quick hair update for a second look that features one of summer hottest trends: braids.
Start by pulling the whole front third of your hair into its own section. Secure the back 2/3 with a rubber band to keep it out of the way and deep part the front section on one side of your head. Go with the side your hair naturally parts on whenever possible.
Loosely french braid the section into a crown right along your scalp line, pulling pieces from the back of the section up to the front.
Once the front braid is complete all the way to the end of your hair, pull front french braid apart carefully with your fingers to loosen it further. Take hair from the other side of your head to create a corresponding small braid.
Before you connect the two braids, tease your hair at the crown so it poofs up over the french braid.
Then connect the two braids in almost a faux half-ponytail. If you have time (and keep a curler at your desk) re-curl a few bottom pieces and the ends of your ponytail to complete the look.
I also love this style for mornings when you’ve showered but don’t have time to fully blow dry your hair. This french braid will make your hair look pulled together even if it’s still slightly wet and you can take the braids out after work for beachy waves.
Then to really get your Katniss on, you can take the braid trend up a notch and make your second-day hair look just as fabulous as the day before. Pull your hair off your face and neck with a literal twist on a chic top knot.
Start by pulling out the half french braid to let the curls loose.
Then grab your hair from the crown right at your hairline and divide it into three sections. Using only the middle section, french braid your hair away from your face at an angle. This angle should happen naturally toward your dominant hand while braiding but emphasize the non-straight line by pulling the braid tight toward either the left or right side of your head as you go.
Once you have reached the top of your head, pull the rest of your hair up and join them all together into a high ponytail. Section the ponytail into three pieces (see a trend here?) and braid each section, securing with tiny clear rubber bands. Then wrap all the smaller braids around to create a top knot bun.
Secure with a rubberband and hide any tails or flyaways with bobby pins, and you’re good to go! This hairstyle made me feel like Rihanna and was so secure I actually slept the night in it and wore it the next day. It’s a perfect edgy update on an office classic that will keep you cool and chic in the summer heat.
