Next Sunday is the holy grail of the celebrity fashion year…the Super Bowl of red carpet season…the gold medal of the fashion Olympics; it’s the Academy Awards. That means the next few days will be full of predictions on winners, snubs, and of course, what everyone will be wearing. So before all of that, we want to start the week with inspiration from red carpets of years past, and our hopes for fashion stand outs this year. We got some help from Chicago stylist Katie Schuppler to round out our nominees for best dressed…
To begin in the present, one of the stars we can’t wait to see walk the carpet is Lupita Nyong’o, Best Supporting Actress nominee and leading lady from the much-acclaimed “Twelve Years a Slave.” After her stunning turn in red Ralph Lauren at the Golden Globes, Nyong’o became the talk of the fashion world. We can’t wait to see what she wears next!
Also on our radar are the women of “American Hustle.” Jennifer Lawrence is the heir-apparent of the Best Actress category and Amy Adams has been stunning on red carpets for years. They are a dream team to be reckoned with both onscreen and on the red carpet.
Lastly, the blondes are really making a splash. From newcomer Margot Robbie of “The Wolf of Wall Street” fame, to the always elegant Cate Blanchett. Blanchett is nominated for “Blue Jasmine” but no matter what color either star wears, they will likely join the ranks of Oscars’ best dressed ladies.
At awards shows of years past, there are been a slew of gorgeous gowns, so it was hard to narrow it down to just a select few. Luckily, we had the help of an expert! Katie Schuppler, from the Chicago fashion company KS Styling, gave us some of her favorite red carpet fashion moments, and we took it from there.
Two of Schuppler’s top looks in recent years, were from Anna Hathaway’s 2009 Armani Prive custom gown and the origami bow on Eva Mendes’s Dior gown at the Golden Globes from that same year. We found a few other stunners to round out the winter white category.
And what would white be without black to balance it out? All hair colors and skin tones are flattering with this classic color as the looks from Reese Witherspoon, Angelina Jolie (and those earrings!), Jessica Chastain and Queen Bey (aka Beyonce) proved over the years.
Black and white and red all over! Who could forget J. Law’s first (blonde!) Oscar appearance in Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein or Kiera Knightly’s sweeping Vera Wang ball gown? This dramatic hue is an Oscar staple that extends beyond the carpet itself.
But a trend that was popular this year on the latest catwalk shows, as well as always being a a star favorite for awards shows, are nude and gold-hued dresses. Schuppler loved the golden goddess gown from Versace that Jessica Alba wore in 2006, and we had to agree! Add in looks from Kate Hudson, Naomi Watts and Renee Zelleweger, and you have a pretty well-rounded cast of superstars.
But if you need a little pop of color in your life, Schuppler has you covered there too! Her last favorite look, which might be our favorite as well, is the green stunner Angelina Jolie wore in 2011 to the Golden Globes. That look from Versace is definitely the jewel of this colorful group, though Charlize Theron and Zoe Saldana do give her a run for her money.
