Let’s be honest. Even with all the great bars and restaurants and parties out there, sometimes you just need a night in. Anyone that knows me can attest to the fact that I actually prefer this most of the time, but in case you’re not an expert in an evening of at-home pampering and relaxation, I have broken down my perfect cuddly night at home…
This is an important balance because you don’t want to have too large of a group where the night becomes almost a party in itself, but you also don’t want to be boring and by yourself. I recommend sticking to 2-3 friends who are the kind you can sit in comfortable silence with. They have the same movie choices as you, will bring good snacks, and won’t stay too late.
THE PREP KIT
A night in is the perfect time to take care of your skin and beauty routines. It will have you looking refreshed and rejuvenated for the next day, and night out.
A face mask is the perfect way to start the evening because it’s quick, effective and allows for some funny snaps of your night in. I love the cooling avocado hydration mask called The Guac Star from Farmhouse Fresh for all of the above. But make sure to end the evening with a thick nighttime moisturizing lotion. Even in our 20s, we need to make sure to take care of our skin!
Pajamas and/or other lounge clothes are required for this evening. But in an effort to upgrade your comfy clothes to Olivia Pope-level of cozy class, we have a few favorites.
A good robe is key. It’s a staple piece that you can use every day after the shower if you wish, but should most certainly be brought out for movie nights. I have my preferred version, from Kassatex, because the color goes with everything and I have far too much fun with the hood. It’s soft and isn’t too long, even on my shorter self.
For a second opinion, I went to Ali (one of my favorite binge-watching pals) and she recommends the UGG Australia style she picked up from Handle With Care here in Chicago. This baby is seriously soft!
Also, if you live in an all-hardwood floor apartment like me, you’ll need a pair of slippers to keep your feet warm and dust-free. These EMU slippers are slip-ons, which I love, but still have a soft lining that keeps my feet warm but not overheated.
I usually have my friends bring the snacks so I can focus on the drinks. Cocktails and wine picks are where I excel but if you’re a baker, now is the time to bust out that new cookie recipe. Or just browse Pinterest for something that’s bite sized and can be served at room temp so you can snack throughout the night.
In terms of drinks, I am a new convert to the red wine club. As a champagne loyalist for many years, this was a big transition for me, but I am loving every velvety red sip so far. If you’re a red wine novice, or even an aficionado, Santa Magherita Chianti Classico Riserva is under $20 and full of Italian flavor. And it goes perfectly with a few episodes of Scandal.
It’s not a true night in without a little Netflix binging (this is a real rule). The online mecca of movies and TV is the ultimate companion, aside from your girl friend, and we have our recommendations for what to watch on your best night in:
- Scandal (sensing a theme here?): Perfect for a first timer like Ali or someone who wants to relive the glory days of Olivia and Fitz
- Princess Bride: Want us to watch this romance classic as soon as it arrives in April? As you wish
- Lie to Me: I just started this crime show and am very much hooked on the quick dialogue, plus I’ve learned a lot about reading the human face
- Seeking a Friend for the End of the World: A lesser known rom com with Kiera Knightly and Steve Carrell that made me bawl
- Dior and I: It’s the perfect documentary for a first-timer because it also involves gorgeous fashion
