While most of us are pretty proficient shoppers (I would call myself a pro), sample sales and warehouse sales are not your run-of-the-mill mall experience. However, for those who live in major cities, these sales are often times the best ways to grab our desired designer duds at a more affordable price. Let’s make sure we shop them right!
Gilt City is the queen of the sale shopping world currently, with new deals going live online every day. Now, they’re also hosting warehouse sales in cities like Chicago, bringing the best of their online shop into our hands. Warehouse sales are coming to the Windy City in October, so before we get our shopping shoes on, we talked with Laura Kujawa, Senior Curator at Gilt City. She gave us her best tips for not just surviving a sample sale, but how to come out on top.
Her best advice for #winning a warehouse sale day is:
PLAN AHEAD: The sale can be pretty overwhelming, so plan your strategy in advance. I usually check out the shoes and purses before heading for the racks upon racks of clothing, since I know that’s going to take a while. Don’t forget there are some amazing treasures in the home section too!
NEVER IT RULE IT OUT: Keep an open mind and don’t hesitate to shop out of season. While it may not be winter yet, you don’t want to regret NOT buying the coat. Am I right? We all know what that’s like!
DRESS FOR SUCCESS: Wear a cross body bag so you have both hands to peruse the clothing racks and also carry your finds. I would also recommend wearing flats, booties or slip on shoes (no lace ups) and something that’s not a huge pain to change in and out of, as most will be making a couple of trips to the dressing room.
MAKE FRIENDS: Play nice and have fun! I’ve found so many gems year after year (most notable YSL black clutch) and one of my friends even found her wedding dress at our last WHS!
But if you’re still nervous about rolling with the big dogs of sale shopping, we have more tips from our team and the experts at Gilt City, including:
ARRIVE EARLY: Just as you would for any sample sale, arrive early! No matter what sale you head to, be sure to get there with ample time as it’s best to view the merchandise when it’s most organized.
REDUCE YOUR DRAG: Some sales require coat check and large bag check, so bring a small purse or wallet that you can keep your credit cards and ID in. Plus, a cross-body bag will leave your hands free to peruse the racks, or sip a cocktail! Also, shopping in light layers will allow you to try clothes on easily, so you may not even have to wait for a fitting room!
BE OPEN-MINDED: While you may have certain items that you’re really focused on purchasing, be sure to take your time and look through the racks. This is usually the time when the magic happens and you’ll find yourself going home with some great steals that you might otherwise not have found!
PLASTIC MAKES PERFECT: No cash, so bring your debit or credit cards!
