Work wear is always a tricky beast. From investment pieces you have to purchase for that “corner office” look, to the little punches of color or sparkle we add to spice things up, the main goal always seems to be comfort that is still stylish. And while pencil skirts and sky high heels look great, they’re not always the easiest to wear all day long. So we went on a hunt for outfit pieces that provide the comfort we need when stuck behind a desk with the chic look we want for after-work happy hours.
A LOOSE WHITE BUTTON DOWN
This is a wardrobe piece that should be in your closet no matter what your profession because it can be worn to any occasion. We love this boyfriend style from LOFT paired with a pencil skirt or this tank version from ACNE paired with a blazer and statement necklace like this Bauble Bar stunner. No matter what office or industry you work in, this piece is a staple that can be personalized to your own style.
DRESSY TRACK PANTS
Track pants can seem daunting for more conservative dressers, but there are plenty of easy ways to master the look. And, when paired with pumps and a dressier top, these are a great alternative to the usual dress pants many of us have to wear to the office. If you want to dip your toe in, start with a basic black pair from Revolve Clothing topped with one of your usual button downs. But if you are bolder, or work in a more creative industry, these floral printed ones from J. Crew are a must!
Cashmere is one of the ultimates in fashion luxury, and it also happens to be the perfect thing to keep at your desk in case you get cold during the day. We love this Vince hoodie style for occasions like those. And for the cashmere feel without the sticker shock, this Ann Taylor option only has a touch of cashmere. We also love a good short sleeved style from J. Crew!
Casual Fridays are the perfect time to focus on comfort with flats, more casual tops or even jeans. For those who can wear denim to the office, we are in love with the new Joga jeans from Silver, which have all the look of blue jeans, with the added comfort of leggings. Top them with a blazer from Topshop or Ralph Lauren to add a chic edge. If jeans are too casual, go for a pair of drapey cargo pants like these from Ann Taylor. Pair either of them with stand-out Steve Madden shoes and you’ll also be ready for Friday drinks with the girls!
Eventually we have to break out the real coats to keep warm on our commute, but that’s no reason to not look stylish while doing it. Wrap coats are very popular for this season and are perfect to cozy up under with a great scarf. We love the leather detailing on this Madewell coat, but the Tahari version is also a great investment. Top it with season’s must-have hat, the fedora from Choies, for a chic and wind-proof look.
AN UPSCALE SWEATSHIRT
Sweatshirts are the epitome of comfort, but it’s key to give them a feminine edge to make them more workplace-appropriate. These options from LOFT, one with jeweled embellishments and one with lace details, are perfect ways to dress up the trend. Give your outfit an upscale finish with accessories like this Tory Burch satchel and delicate jewelry from Gabriela Artigas.
Dresses are a great piece for the office because they can be worn all year round so long as you layer with jackets, tights or boots. This button down version from ACNE combines two of our recommended styles, as does this ultimate cashmere selection from J. Crew. For a printed option, go for a Paul & Joe Sister option, which can easily be layered for cooler months.
