The September Issue. In the fashion and print world, the term is synonymous with hundreds of glossy pages of the highest, best and newest fashion of the year. For fashion lovers it means hours of pouring over each article, photo and ad to create your fall shopping lust list and to learn about the latest from your favorite names in the fashion industry. And after much “research” into this year’s style tomes, we have compiled our top lessons learned, and a shopping list to go along with it!
- FLORALS ARE NOT JUST FOR SPRING
We have seen them all over the cool NYFW street style blogs, and for those of us who just can’t let go of summer, autumnal floral prints are the way to go. People Style Watch has it as one of their top fall “must-haves” and recommends it for girly girls with a feminine style like Kerry Washington or Lauren Conrad. Think Tracey Reese dresses or this Free People sweatshirt.
2. MENSWEAR CAN BE LADYLIKE
Glamour calls it “workaholic chic” but whether you borrow from the boys, or just up the ante on your own office wardrobe, menswear is a perfect fall staple for anytime of day. Look at Anne Taylor or Simon Shopping Center ads for inspiration, then hit up White House Black Market for sexy smart separates.
3. CHUNKY KNITS ARE CUDDLY AND STYLISH
Seen in almost every issue is this fall constant, but with new twists this year. Layer them for a mountainous boho look, or belt a thick knit sweater and wear it over a pencil skirt for the office. Tommy Hilfiger is known for being an expert in the look and even has some styles on sale right now! The key is to create balance by pairing the knits with at least one tighter piece or you’ll end up looking like a puff ball.
4. EVERYONE NEEDS A FAVORITE ACCESSORY
Glamour proclaimed it to be true in their September issue, and we have to agree. Whether you choose statement earrings, cuff rings, collar necklaces or even a faux earring cuff is up to you. But accessories are an easy way to update your wardrobe for the new season or put a twist on your favorite go-to outfit. We love these earrings and this necklace.
5. LESS IS MORE
This of course goes for your makeup and beauty routine, as the “no makeup makeup” trend continues to be popular, but it can also apply to the cost of your clothes. With more designers, from Vera Wang to Versace, offering cost-effective lines through partnerships with large retailers, you don’t always have to pay the price to rock the look. Two great lines out this fall are Juicy Couture for Kohls and Altuzarra for Target (above), which launches this Sunday!
6. BEING COMFORTABLE IS OKAY
From flats like oxfords (above) or even designer sneakers to the ongoing trend of dressing up your favorite graphic tee or sweatshirt, this fall is going to be a comfortable one. And this even extends to easy denim! Silver Jeans has fused the yoga pant with denim to create their Joga Jean. Made of a unique double-faced stretch weave; the top is woven like traditional denim and the underneath is a plush knit. Pair them with a flat riding boot and a printed tee for a fun casual look.
7. KENDALL JENNER IS KIND OF A BIG DEAL
She’s walking on runways for designers like Diane von Furstenberg this week in New York, and she has officially dropped the “Jenner” from her professional name. But before she went the way of Madonna and Rihanna with the single name, Kendall (Jenner) graced not only Teen Vogue but the iconic Vogue Magazine itself this fall. And with two cover looks, as well as a high glam photo, it seems like Kendall is going to be a name we’re hearing a lot more of in next year’s September issues.
