I’m the kind of person that hates clutter. I’m sort of like an anti-hoarder. I purge my closet twice a year and toss anything I haven’t worn since the last time I did it. I only had enough of my wedding photos printed to frame a few, and I leave the rest on the disk to avoid having a pile of pictures stashed somewhere. I get rid of koozies from bachelorette parties, and I pass up free samples because I just don’t want meaningless stuff in my home.
I get my abhorrence for clutter from my mom. If we left anything lying around for more than a few days, she’d assume it was trash and toss it (there was more than one time as a kid I had to tell my teacher that my mom threw out my homework.)
I truly believe that clutter can weigh you down, psychologically, and that an organized, clean home is a happy one.
In fact, in a recent article in the New York Times, Japanese organizational consultant Maria Kondo, who has a three-month long wait list for her services, said these profound words, which basically sums up my own motto: “There is nothing more annoying than papers … After all, they will never spark joy, no matter how carefully you keep them.”
Even if you have a higher tolerance for clutter, the New Year is the perfect time to get rid of those items you no longer want around – photos of your ex, tuition payments that you’ve (finally!) paid off – any of your forgettable memories from 2014. The good news is that you have a chance to get rid of it all in a big, exciting way. On December 28, 2014, Shred-it and the Times Square Alliance are teaming up for a fun event called Good Riddance Day. It’s all about saying goodbye to the things that have held you down for the last year, and getting a fresh start in the New Year. It’s inspired by a Latin American tradition of putting artifacts or bad memories from the past year into dolls and setting them on fire to purge bad memories.
Sound fun? Here’s how you can enter to win a trip for two to New York to participate in Good Riddance Day to shake it off, like T-Swift says.
-Submit a picture of the item you want to say Good Riddance to forever, along with an explanation in 500 words or less. Submissions are due November 24, 2014, at 11:59 p.m. EST. A panel of judges will then pick the best entry. That’s it!
If you win, you’ll get:
-A five night trip to New York to attend Good Riddance Day, including airfare for two, and a five-night hotel stay.
-Exclusive pre-viewing of the Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball.
-Two tickets to the New Year’s Eve VIP party.
Click here to submit your entries, and good luck!
