Is there anything worse in the summer than melting makeup, sticky hair products and sweating through your morning blowout? We can’t think of much. A bee landing in your glass of rose, maybe?
Which is why summer is the most important time of year to work on your au natural look. Taking extra care of your skin and hair during your daily beauty routine and choosing smart, summer-friendly products means you’ll need less makeup and time under the 400 degree styling tools.
While we’ll admit that you won’t catch us sans mascara even with the best skincare routine, these are the products we’ll be counting on to help us go almost fresh-faced.
If there was ever a miracle product to combat summer humidity, Kerastase’s Spray Fluidissime is it. It takes about 5 seconds to apply, it’s effective, and it has a fresh, light scent that’s just right for the season. Our favorite way to use it is to spray it on damp hair and air dry, because who wants to turn on a blow dryer when it’s 85 and humid outside?
Sweat, heat, and humidity make summer prime season for breakouts. One of the best ways to stave them off is to step up your exfoliation game in order to get rid of all the dead skin and oil that’ll otherwise end up clogging your pores. Rodan & Fields Microdermabrasion Paste is one of the best exfoliators we’ve used. It’s a bit rougher than your average scrub (hence the microdermabrasion designation), but we promise using it once a week will leave your skin smoother than it’s ever been. Bonus: You’ll finally be able to purchase something from your friend who is constantly hawking the stuff on Facebook.
We love Estee Lauder’s entire Genuine Glow product line for it’s lightweight feel and overall effectiveness. Our two favorites, however, are the Priming Moisture Eye Balm and Eyelighting Cream for Face and Eyes. The eye balm is water-based, which makes it smooth, quick to absorb, and super-hydrating. It also has a refreshing cooling sensation when it’s applied that helps soothe puffiness. The Eyelighting Cream is a slightly tinted, shimmering cream that you can dot in areas your want to highlight, like the inner corners of your eyes, browbone, and cheekbones. Like everything else we’ve listed here, a little goes a long way.
The last thing you want to do in the summer is pile on a ton of makeup, because sweat-streaks in a mask of foundation is a good look on exactly no one. Mineral make up is a perfect option for summer because it’s effective with even a small amount of product so it doesn’t look or feel heavy on your skin. We love Bare Minerals Pure Radiance mineral makeup for giving skin a warm, natural glow. It has a slight shimmer and a sun-kissed color that looks like a dewy tan, minus the UVs. Don’t need a bronzed glow? We also love the Bare Minerals brand’s original powder foundations, since they provide chemical-free, broad spectrum SPF 15.
Again, the name of the game in summer beauty is less is more. If you’re layering sunscreen, eye cream, and makeup on your face, a heavy moisturizer will make you look and feel greasy as soon as temps start to rise. Our favorite answer: Aesop’s antioxidant serum. It’s moisturizing, lightweight, and it’s absorbed almost immediately into your skin. Not to mention antioxidants will help fight off any damage done by accidental UV exposure.
