For most people living in a big city, renting an apartment as opposed to buying a place is the only option. From a monetary or flexibility stand point, renting is just easier in the long run. With frequent moves, housing complexes, and house rules from land lords, however, sometimes renting means you’re not able to make your place wholly your own. There are little things you can do and touches you can add to even the smallest apartment though, that will make your temporary space feel like a long term home!
WAKE UP TO SOMETHING SUNNY
How you begin your day sets the tone for every meeting, coffee date, work out and to do you have on your plate. There’s nothing worse than waking up on the wrong side of the bed, or in a gloomy apartment. That means having the right curtains! It sounds simple, but having the right window treatments allows you to block out the sun for a great night sleep, and then let the sun shine onto your morning. Having the right curtains can also help save on energy and heating costs, especially in a city with changing weather like Chicago. I love the Eclipse Madison curtains, which are black-out, but also noise canceling and energy saving. Perfect for an inner-city spot!
CREATE YOUR OWN SPA SPACE
Bathrooms in city apartments can be tricky to navigate. Most of the time you’re sharing your space with at least one more person, and no matter what, space will be tight. If done right though, bathroom can be quite the escape for a relaxing bath, hot shower, or just a little dance party while you do your makeup. Get a water proof speaker to jam in the shower, and keep candles on hand to set a relaxing mood while you unwind at the end of the day. We also highly recommend investing in a robe (either cozy or lacy depending on your preference) and some nice, plush towels. I recommend the Noble Excellence MicroCotton® Elite towels, because not only do I love them, but one of my out-of-town guests actually bought them after using them when staying with me.
ADD POPS OF COLOR
Not everyone can paint the walls of their apartment, so sometimes we get stuck with a lovely taupe or stark white shade being the main color scheme of your home. As sexy as those colors sound, it will help your mood, and the personality of your home, if you add a little color! By investing in a few well placed prints for your walls, and coffee table books for your extra surfaces, you’ll do a lot of good! Even adding a few candles can make a cozy world of difference.
UPGRADE YOUR KITCHEN
We are all adults now people. It’s time to have a grown-up kitchen. Get yourself some matching silverware, and a full set of plates and bowls. You can also create a safe haven in your kitchen with a little bit of java. Since investing in the Starbucks Verismo system, I have been drinking coffee a lot more at home, which saves money as well as allows for a more relaxing morning routine. Whether you go for something along those lines or stick to classic K-Cups, being able to relax in your own home over a cup of coffee is a great way to start the work day or a relaxing Sunday.
“CHEERS” TO YOUR BAR CART
Every good day should end with a toast and a bit of relaxation. Going out for a nightly glass of wine can get pricey though, so it’s time to upgrade your bar cart game. This means having a variety of hard alcohol and wine on hand for guests, as well as always having a bottle of bubbly chilling in the fridge. One of our favorites is Moet & Chandon Champagne, but feel free to taste test until you find your top pick. Sometimes the only thing to celebrate is having a bottle of bubbly in your fridge, but hopefully soon you’ll also be celebrating a beautifully decorated apartment.
