It’s no secret the Thompson Chicago is one of my favorite hotels. It’s new to the city but is becoming a staple for a high class yet available luxury experience, and they only partner with the best brands in food, hospitality, and now scent. Luxury brand 12.29 creates amazing candles and custom scents for brands worldwide, and the Thompson Chicago is now among them. 12.29 created “Velvet,” a custom scent for the hotel, which is now available for purchase for a limited time. Get it while you can…
I of course recommend you also stay at the hotel, not just for the amazing pillows and customer service, but for the overall ambience of upscale comfort. The whole experience starts within the first moments you walk through the double doors into the lobby and smell that distinctive Thompson scent. And now, the amazing “olfactive branding company” (aka they create amazing scents), 12.29 will sell their sumptuous candles in an exclusive boutique in that very Thompson lobby. You don’t even have to stay in the hotel to have access – This event is open to the public! You can get your hands on that elusive Thompson smell. But you only have until March 20th before it’s gone.
The 12.29 brand is run by twin sisters Dawn and Samantha Goldworm, and named for their shared birthday. Though they say they still meet people who can’t tell them apart, they have very different roles; Dawn as the Scent Director (with a nose trained in the fragrance industry for year), and Samantha as the Business Director. The two have worked with world renowned fashion and hospitality brands, from Zac Posen to Rodarte to Jason Wu. Not to mention luxury art fairs, Melbourne Fashion Week and Mercedes Benz.
But now they have created “Velvet,” a signature scent just for the Thompson. Though some scents include 100+ ingredients, “Velvet” includes only 13, including ambre and leather.
Their line of candles, including “Velvet,” is usually available only online so this Thompson pop-up will be the only place in Chicago, in the entire country, where you can purchase the scents in person. The sisters and the Thompson invite patrons to become a part of the “intellectual curiosity,” that Dawn felt in the hotel.
Dawn says they wanted the Thompson scent to feel “sexier,” as if the person were about to “slide into a leather chair with a glass of scotch.” They want to give patrons of the hotel a “comfortable but engaged” feeling when they walk through the front door.
There other three candles at the boutique: “A Dark Affair Desire” (a dark scent with notes of amber, smoked woods and incense); “A Forgotten Memory” (stronger and more earthy with fresh tobacco, and warm spice smells); or “Forget Everything but Me” (the L&C favorite with a lux saffron, dark woods, and resin). According to the sisters, all the names are “based around the love stories people go through in life.”
Visit Thompson Chicago’s 12.29 lobby boutique to purchase a candle or enjoy a fragrance consultation from the hotel’s concierge team who will walk visitors through the experience of each scent. You only have a week, and then the Thompson scent won’t be available again until the summer. It’s worth a trip, I promise!
