Regina George might always wear pink on Wednesdays, but we are about to add a whole bunch of pink into our own wardrobes and work out routines! As part of our partnership with SELF Magazine, we are so happy to announce our participation in the “Avon39 Walk to End Breast Cancer.” Both our Chicago editor Kaleigh and Chicago correspondent Ali will be joining masses of women in the Windy City for a 39.2 mile walk weekend…get those band aids ready!
Thanks to celebrities like Angelina Jolie, breast cancer has been in the news recently but it doesn’t just affect people who walk the red carpet. Research shows that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and likelihood number nearly doubles for those with an immediate family who has a history of breast cancer. This means that everyone: man or woman, someone with a family history or not…everyone will likely have breast cancer touch themselves or someone they know.
We are honored to participate in the walk, but even for work out gurus like Ali, 39 miles is a long way! So that’s why we are lucky to have the support of the team at SELF Magazine to get us walking and training properly. As the co-founder of the Pink Ribbon, SELF is always finding ways to get the important message of breast cancer awareness and research out there. This year, SELF has partnered with Avon to host SELF Training Teams in seven cities across the country in anticipation of the “Avon39 Walk to End Breast Cancer” walks as another way to support the cause. Our Chicago SELF team will start training on March 16th for the walk on June 6-7 (pray for good weather!)
The goal of SELF’s Training Walks is about not only supporting breast cancer, but creating a community of people who are interested in the pursuit of health overall. It’s allowing us to work out literally anywhere, with anyone, and make it fun!
In the words of Joyce Change, Editor of SELF, “People treat fitness almost like travel now because it’s an experience, and when you have a great experience, you want to share it.”
And we are looking forward to sharing it with all of you! Follow our social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram @luxandconcord for live updates, as well as more training tips and work out features on the blog.
To our Chicago readers, we would like to invite any and all of you to join the team with SELF Magazine and us! We can promise lots of shopping trips for pink work out gear, plenty of pump-up playlists and a seriously inspiring weekend for an amazing cause. If you can’t walk, or don’t live in Chicago, we of course would love for you to donate to the cause! You can donate any amount here to help Ali reach her fundraising goal, and make real changes in the research and prevention of breast cancer. Please join us!
