With the sun peaking out more and more recently, I’ve stumbled upon some seriously surprising motivation as of late. I’ve exchanged my notorious napping routine (hey, girl’s gotta sleep!) for a fitness routine since #Chiberia is no longer interwoven into every single conversation, and have even found a little leftover inspiration to tackle some projects at home.
And when I say at “home,” I mean in my little apartment with the hand-me-down furniture because I’m on that advertising salary life… ya dig? Via some serious Pinteresting, googling and online shopping, I have recently undertook what others might regard as a tiny project, but it made a big difference in my humble abode. And what is this update you might ask? Revamping a bookshelf!
My favorite décor boutique, Update Interiors, is located not too far outside Chicago, and offers a vast array of beautiful- no, really, like stunning- pieces, big and small, that can make a room or add that last finishing touch with a trinket you couldn’t have even dreamed up in the depths of your Pinterest rampages. Plus, not only does this Oak Park décor mecca have drool-worthy pieces for a price tag that won’t bust your wallet- they set up their entire store so that you can walk in and feel immediately inspired. Have I not ranted enough? Because I’m kind of obsessed.
After purusing their pretty store, and doing a little research on my own, here’s some tips I picked up when upping my bookshelf game:
1. Back It Up
Aside from having that song stuck in your head now (yeah, you know which one), this little tip can make a titanic difference for your DIY bookshelf project. Don’t be afraid to revamp the physical bookshelf itself with a pop of background color, pattern or even texture. One of my favorite styles was getting really crazy and adding a chalkboard background to your bookshelf- think your favorite Hemingway quotes adorning your holding place for these classics, and I dare you not to swoon. Ok, I might be the only one still swooning over Hemingway quotes, but this look is as trendy as it is useful, so what’s not to love?
I feel like this is a tip I give on all of my how-to pieces, but accessories are no longer just for your ears, neck and arms- they’re for your bookshelf too (who knew?!). Don’t be afraid to grab a funky piece, and another one, and then another one and fill that bad boy up! I’m loving this bookshelf (above) with pops of gold to contrast the bright the marble and cream.
3. Mix n’ Match
You can certainly mix and match colors and styles, but I’m actually talking pretty specifically about how you’re laying out your books. Put some right in the middle of the shelf and polish off with pretty book ends, and then lay some horizontally on the shelf below. The more books, the more fun!
4. Make it Personal
Throw some pictures on that bookshelf, frame your favorite inspirational quote, or highlight your favorite books and give them a top spot with the prettiest piece. This is your masterpiece, so don’t be afraid to go outside the box and make it yours.
After my own research, I decided to do a little application. As if I needed any excuse to spend more time looking and loving on books…
While my budget and schedule was pretty tight, I wasn’t able to do anything crazy, but I was able to make an old, passed down shelf come back to life again! With these gorgeous (and unique!) pieces from Update Interiors to complete the look, I’ll be perusing my own bookshelves and using it as a perfect excuse to revisit all my favorite books again.
In celebration of all things Spring, head over to Update Interiors, grab some new pieces, or even just some inspiration, and spruce the crap out of those shelves!
