New York Fashion Week is around the corner, and this year, instead of just gawking at all of the amazing street style photos taken on the steps of Lincoln Center and the sidewalks of West Chelsea, you’re actually going to be one of those it girls. Because after years of attending the shows, we’ve learned a few things about how to dress for NYFW. Here, tips on what to wear to a fashion show (or at least look like you’re headed to one).
1. Look in the mirror, then add one thing.
Forget what you heard about looking in the mirror before you leave your house and taking one thing off, because this is fashion week. If you’re about to leave the house and you’re satisfied with your outfit, add something else. It’s probably the little extra detail you’ll need to stand out from the crowd.
2. Wear something on your head.
If it’s a floppy hat, great. A beanie, even better. Something Kate Middleton would wear to a royal relative’s wedding, we’ll see you on Style.com.
3. Pay no attention to the weather.
When you’ve been planning your outfit for a month, not Hell nor high water, or sub-zero temps, or a foot of snow will change those plans. That’s why God made Uber.
4. Or the practicality of your shoes.
See the line about Uber, above. Because never will more people appreciate or compliment your Nicholas Kirkwood stilettos than at fashion week.
5. Get an it bag.
Like a Celine Luggage tote, a Fendi Peekaboo, or a classic Chanel Caviar bag. If you can’t get afford an it bag, get something vintage, with a long strap, in leather.
6. And bright lipstick.
Everyone wears lipstick to fashion week, and the brighter, the better. Think hot pink, fire-engine red, or a juicy shade of orange.
7. Give Zero Fucks.
If you think your Doc Martens from eighth grade look perfect with the pleated Alexander Wang skirt you got on sale at Nordstrom, and your brand new blazer from Forever 21, and knee-high socks, and a mini backpack because you’re feeling inspired by Cher Horowitz right now, then you wear that outfit. And you own it. Because there’s nowhere better to make a big, crazy, or fabulous fashion statement than fashion week.
8. If all else fails, wear black.
Can’t find anything suitable to wear in your closet? Make like a seasoned fashion editor and wear head-to-toe black. Black leather pants, black booties, and a black coat (Wool, leather, fur, doesn’t matter), and then follow our advice above and throw on a black beanie, bright orange lipstick, and your it bag/vintage leather purse. Done and done.
