Halloween has always been a favorite holiday for our L&C editors, as we all love breaking out our inner fashionista for a big night of fall festivities! And while we have been buzzing about the big day for weeks now, not all of us have costumes! So we brought in the experts: Chicago costume shops Fantasy Costumes and Chicago Costume. They gave us inspiration and ideas from the hottest costumes this year.
Frozen was everywhere on our TV screens and radio stations in 2014, and that trend has carried right into the holiday, with both locations saying Queen Elsa or Princess Anna are easy choices for the Disney star in all of us, even little girls. And if you want to get really creative, you can always try a DIY of Olaf the snowman too!
Other fantastical favorites include updates on Disney princesses like Snow White or Maleficent (not technically a princess but still amazing). And for men, the Guardians of the Galaxy action stars will make any guy feel like a hero.
Cathy Bunger, Manager of Fantasy Costumes says these more fanciful themes have had an upswing in popularity in recent years thanks to social media, which alerts manufacturers to popular trends in real time.
And the costumes are perfect for Halloween parties, with Bunger adding, “Adults using a whimsical theme for a party ensures all participants will be utilizing their inner child.”
And of course the classic choice is always a 1920’s flapper girl. This is perfect for anyone who has a costume party to attend but isn’t overly into the holiday, because there are plenty of levels of commitment you can try. A wig or other accessories like pearls and a fake cigarette take the look up a notch but aren’t totally necessary, for example.
Other long-standing favorites, according to Bunger, are other movie favorites like Mike Myers or The Wizard of Oz. Plus historical figures like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and Cleopatra are also great standbys. Why?
“Come on,” she laughs, “Its Elvis! Even little toddlers know who Elvis is 40 years after his death!”
But if you want to get noticed on Halloween night, and social media for weeks after, make sure you feel comfortable in your costume and can really work it! Tag us in you Instagram photos at @luxandconcord to show off your best costumes!
