Live in a small space? Us too. But, that doesn’t have to stop you from throwing the best holiday get together of the year.
A few small tweaks to your furniture setup, and some festive décor, and you’ll have a room fit for a party! We called in the experts from Value City and American Signature Furniture to help us with the former, and ended up with an evening full of sparkles, bubbles and joyful tidings…
Living in a city means that space is always at a premium, especially in apartment buildings. So when you’re entertaining at home, start by looking at the room, and making a plan to lay out your furniture in a way that makes the room look as big as possible.
Feel free to move things around before a party– you might find a new feng shui for your room! Place larger items against the wall and make a functional item, like a gorgeous table, your room centerpiece. I chose the Paradiso Collection Cocktail Table from Value City Furniture, above, because the mirrored top made the room look even bigger, and topped it with holiday touches like ornaments, fun snacks and a gorgeous Kalla flowers bouquet.
Another key to entertaining in a small space? Buy furniture that’s multi-functional for optimal seating and dining spaces. Instead of a wine rack, for example, try a bar cart. It can hold all your fancy stemware, mixers, and even light snacks. When I found this Carnival Island Collection Wine Cabinet it was love at first sip. It has lots of room for glasses and, ahem, booze, and because the top opens, I was able to use the small shelves for more holiday decorations too.
Last but never least, make your room work to really showcase your holiday spirit. Sprinkle ornaments on the tabletops and bar cart, and pick a few decorative pieces to make focal points. For me it was the flower arrangement on my coffee table and our tree. The Valerie III Collection Storage Bench is great all year long to store blankets and games, but by putting it next to the tree, it became the perfect spot for festive photos!
No matter your budget or space, what’s important is to make the room feel comfortable for your guests and full of holiday cheer! Put your own little touches on things to make your event personal and welcoming to one and all.
As for the food, drinks, and ambiance, here are a few things that we learned while planning our small space party. (And be sure to check out the rest of our party photos, taken by the amazing Eat Pray Photo, below!)
Think mini – Bite size foods are not only easier for guests to eat while chatting, but also easier for you to set up on various surfaces throughout the house if you don’t have a big dining table or buffet. I went with small bowls of chili, and plates of cheese, crackers and charcuterie.
Define a space. Use rugs to help define the various seating areas in your home or apartment. I love this chevron version, also from Value City Furniture, because it packs a pop with neutral colors.
Amp up (or down) your cocktail game – I love champagne, but those long stemmed glasses can be tricky at larger gatherings. That’s why I love these stemless versions, which can also double for wine cocktail glasses.
Lighting is key – I am always a fan of candles, but having lamps that allow a variety of lighting to help set the mood.
