When it comes to holiday gifting, I think it’s WAY easier to buy for women. For one, there are certain “no-fail” gifts that all women are happy with. You can’t go wrong with jewelry, massages, Essie’s newest color or gift cards to Sephora. Plus, most women have clearly labeled Pinterest boards listing every single thing they’ve ever wanted.
Men are different. They don’t really like jewelry. They can be a little weird about going to the spa. And, they probably don’t have digital documentation of “Winter Boots They NEED.”
So, what on earth do you buy a guy? We had no idea, so we asked Philip Saul, owner of the Boston menswear boutique SAULT New England, for a little help.
Here’s what he had to say: (P.S., if you need some extra help, stop by his shop in the South End, or find SAULT New England at the Shop Small Pop Up store, a partnership between American Express and Marriott Hotels, at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf though November 30, 2014).
What are three unique gift ideas for guys this year?
It always depends on the guy, but tech is big with the iPhone 6. We have wood covers for the 5 and 6, along with some cool fabric-covered cords that are cool and unusual. Winter accessories are always good, and we have leather iTouch gloves that are perfect for a guy who’s into fashion. We also have a great assortment of personal care items that bundle well together. Add some shave cream by Urasa Major, razors by Harry’s, and a few bars of beer soap to one of our dopp kits by Owen and Fred, and you have a personalized gift for any guy.
What are some no-fail (read: generic, or one-size-fits-all) gift ideas for men who are really hard to shop for?
We have our $18 solid, argyle, and rugby striped wool cashmere blend socks. What guy wouldn’t want these? They’re easy and at a great price point.
What are some of the big trends in men’s fashion right now that might help ladies identify great gifts?
We try to focus on classic casual menswear at SAULT. But, we also follow trends and adapt them to our customer. One big trend is the athletic look. The Campion brand by Todd Snyder is a great example of this. Their pocket crew neck sweatshirts and tapered jogger pants are not the typical sweats you are used to. They are well constructed, fitted and all made in Toronto. A few pieces mixed with jeans or a classic oxford shirt, and you’ll be on point but not looking like you’re trying too hard.
It’s still kind of early into gift-giving season, but have you identified any “hot” presents in the store yet, such as things that are going to be best sellers for the holidays?
Stocking stuffers are always a great seller. Who doesn’t like to open a few gifts? We have a ton of great gifts for every type of guy from your younger brother to your grandpa and every man in between. You can find wallets by Jack Spade, cool bottle openers made in the USA, and even the classic nostalgic balsa wood plane that was a staple for every all-American kid
The Shop Small Pop Up at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf is open now until Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. at 296 State St., Boston, MA, 02109.
