On my holiday wish list: After having to put together various gift guides for my job, my own Christmas list has gotten greedily lengthy this year. Two things that make my list every year, though, are jewelry and books. I love supporting Chicago designers and businesses, and Julie Schwanbeck—whose line is called Jules—makes a cool rectangular ID tag necklace I’m dying for this year.
As for books, I’ve been trying to read the classics that I somehow skipped over in high school, and next up is Catcher in the Rye. I love the look of vintage or hardbound books on a shelf, so I’d choose a copy from a used bookstore over a brand new edition. And I can never get enough fashion and art coffee table books—I’d love to get Graydon Carter’s Vanity Fair 100 Years.
Last but not least, I’d love to get this amazing print that artistically charts out the Chicago marathon course. My roommate Stephanie and I are both marathoners and this would be a perfect to our wall of framed art in the living room.
The best gift I’ve ever gotten is: The first thing that comes to mind is my ‘Taurus’ bracelet, which I love for a lot of reasons. It’s a thin hammered bronze cuff with nine dots punched into it, making the shape of the Taurus constellation (which is my horoscope). It was a gift from my boyfriend and was meaningful because I knew he had paid attention to my tastes, which, when it comes to jewelry, are pretty specific. Also, it’s made by another Chicago designer, Winifred Gundeck, whose line is called Winifred Grace. I never take it off!
The best gift I’ve ever given is: I sort of pride myself on gift giving, because I don’t get a gift until the perfect idea strikes. (Which means, sometimes, that the gift comes late…other times I get it early and can’t contain my excitement and end up ruining the surprise.) One of my favorite gifts to give, though, is to my mom. Every year my sister and I go shopping for our mom together and buy a variety of separates and accessories; then we put together a mini ‘look book’ to show her how she can style the pieces we bought her into a dozen different looks. I also recently bought a pair of boxer briefs that say Ellen across the waistband for a boyfriend (Ellen is my full name, but I bought them from the Ellen DeGeneres Show gift shop!). I’m considering purchasing for my entire family and everyone else in my life so they remember me often! (kidding!)
