Finding a good hairstylist is kind of like finding your soul mate. They have to be someone you feel comfortable communicating with. They have to be able to hold a great conversation. They have to be a person you trust completely. And, it often takes some dating around (and a few disastrous experiences) before you finally find the right person.
Having lived in New York, Chicago, Boston and Seattle (a few of those more than once), I’ve done my fair share of hairstylist dating, and it hasn’t always been easy. True story, it took me two years to find a hairstylist I liked in Boston. And then we moved to Seattle a year later. I was a little worried that I’d have to spend the entire year with ugly bangs or stubby layers or something because I wouldn’t be able to find someone I liked. But lucky for me, Sassoon reached out to L&C shortly after my move about a partnership where I’d be able to try out some of their top stylists. (I know, lucky right?) So I said “HECK YES!”
I wasn’t as nervous as I typically would have been to try a new place, because I was familiar with the Sassoon brand (plus they had stellar Yelp reviews), but still not entirely convinced that this would be my salon soul mate while I was in Seattle.
Then I went in for my first cut and color, and I knew I had an amazing team right away. After dating literally dozens of hairstylists I learned a few things about knowing when you’ve found a winner. Here’s how I knew Creative Director, Lisa Baber and Color Director, Carmen Gallander of Sassoon Seattle were the ones, and how you can apply these important criteria to find your own hairy-godmother (I should probably never say that again!).
1. They’re honest with you. When it comes to my hair, I need honesty. If I bring in 12 photos from Pinterest and say I want a stick straight platinum blonde bob, I want someone who is going to tell me before things get started that, because I have fine hair my bob probably won’t be stick straight unless I spend an hour with the flat iron each day, or that it’s going to take me eight coloring sessions to actually become as blonde as I want to be. For me, honesty builds trust. When I first went in to get my hair done at Sassoon, I met with Carmen and showed her a picture of Chiara Ferragni and said I wanted her hair. She told me that since I had previously colored my hair and my natural color was darker than The Blonde Salad’s, it was going to take me a few sessions to get similar results, and even then the highlights wouldn’t be quite as light. Expectations set.
2. They’re skilled. This goes without saying but let’s discuss anyway. Your hairstylist should know what they’re doing. I trust Sassoon because, not only do the stylists undergo apprenticeship and ongoing training, but the company has an acclaimed Academy which is recognized as the “Harvard of Hair.” I take that as a good sign. Carmen and Lisa are also the Color Director and Creative Director, respectively, at Sassoon. Which means they’re the top dogs, or the bossladies to put it in a more feminine manner. I’ve learned the hard way that you don’t always want to go for the salon newbie just because they’re less expensive. They might be great! But learn a little bit about a stylist’s background if you can before booking.
3. You have great conversations. This is important to me. If I’m going to spend half a day with someone while getting my hair done, it’s nice to enjoy their company. I first met Carmen and Lisa when my son was about eight weeks old. Getting my hair done was one of my first outings as a new mom, and I was super flustered and actually ended up having to leave with my hair still wet because I’d scheduled my appointment too close to my son’s doctor’s appointment. (New mom fail). However, being at the salon was almost therapeutic for me. Both Carmen and Lisa are moms to little boys under the age of two, and they had tons of great advice (and a sympathetic ear) for me, and also seemed totally put together which gave me hope for myself. Since that first visit, I love going in to catch up with both of them about their kids and share stories about my own babe. It’s like having coffee with a friend (except I’m the only one drinking coffee, but hey!).
The best thing about Sassoon: They have locations in Seattle, Boston, New York, Miami, and a bunch of other cities, too … including Chicago, where I’ll be moving to in a couple of weeks. So while I can’t take Carmen & Lisa with me, I know I’ll have an equally talented and friendly duo waiting for me in the Windy City.
