“Welcome to Fashion Next, an exclusive runway presentation and awards ceremony supporting the vision of emerging designers and fostering fashion’s next generation.” It is with this welcome line that we had the pleasure of attending Elle’s Fashion Next show – and easily one of our favorites! Fashion Next is an initiative Elle Magazine started to showcase young designers. Focusing on one top American fashion school each year, Elle partnered with New York based powerhouse Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Eighteen graduating design students had the chance to present their creations in front of industry decision makers and celebrities.
Brooklyn native Joshua Myrie opened the show with three looks in the upstairs section of the David Koch center. The mini collections shown throughout were filled with intricate detailing, exquisite fabrics, and superb craftsmanship. The backdrop of the venue included various city skylines, perfectly executed with club music mixed with dubstep. The modern runway details, paired with flowy hair and a classic red lip, solidified our love for this ELLE production! We were up close and personal with the front row as guests started to trickle in. Mingling in the front row were Brad Goreski, Alexa Chung, Christina Ricci, Erin Wasson, and Joe Zee.
Jongsuk Park, Maybelline New York Fashion Next Award recipient, said humbly after winning the $25,000 grant, “At first, I couldn’t say anything because I didn’t even know it was me. I thought someone else would win. I was looking at their work for two full months, and [it] was so great. I was even inspired by them.” The great collaboration and craftsmanship shown by each finalist was truly inspiring, brought to light by a flawless production.
