We have many a blogger-crush here at L&C, and Ellie Eckert from CityBrewed is certainly one of them. The New York girl and fellow latte lover has an effortless style, and browsing her blog makes us want to throw on a boyfriend tee shirt and jaunty fedora before heading out to our favorite hidden coffee shop. Because we’re so into her easy, mysterious, almost Parisian look, we tapped Eckert to help us master some serious street style for spring…
1. Build your wardrobe around neutrals. “My style is typically all about neutrals,” Eckert says. “In the spring, I like to switch things up with floral accents on denim, some pops of color in a blouse, or adding some new beauty trends to a particularly colorless outfit.”
Switching things up, and turning a classic trend on its head seem to be the basis of Eckerts’s fashion wheelhouse. In addition to floral accents this spring, she is is also looking forward to adding the “metals” trend a la Roberto Cavalli’s Spring 2014 runway show. It’s another style that goes against her “neutrals only” policy, but if a trend catches her eye, she goes for it.
2. Embrace the cool factor of hats. Hats are all over Eckert’s blog. She counts her brown wide brim fedora as the signature item in her closet. “I throw it on whenever I’m running out the door and want to tie together a simple outfit. It also helps for questionable hair days.”
Blogging, and living in the Big Apple, has helped her hone her style, and her hat game, but she has recommendations for pulling off this tricky trend as well. As simple as it sounds, it all comes down to trial and error. Eckert now knows what works on her face shape, but she still spends an afternoon every so often at her favorite local market trying on hat after hat. If you want to find a new look for you, you have to go looking for it!
3. Get good basics. While a signature hat is on her “must have” list, she also relies on a few tried-and-true basics, which include a pair of “sunnies” you can grab on the go, red lipstick, a leather jacket (hers is Claudie Pierlot and was a gift from her mom) and last but not least, the perfect pair of denim.
“Investing in a great pair of jeans can change up your wardrobe just like that. I’m a freak about finding new pairs: boyfriend, straight leg, high-waisted, and I’m even dabbling in flare this season.”
4. Be Yourself. No matter what she’s wearing, from oversized tees to delicate layered jewelry to the boxy Stella McCartney sweatshirt she recently picked up, Eckert thrives on New York’s acceptance of her style.
“More so than any other city in the world, New York is accepting. I’ve found that I could really wear anything that I want, and most people won’t question it. I’ve really been able to experiment with my style since living here. It’s allowed me to come into my own and to decide what I like and what I don’t.”
Regardless of wear you live, this is a great lesson in style: be yourself, and wear what you like.
