They say that blisters aren’t forever, and that’s true, but memories certainly are. Though the blisters, sore knees and tight muscles might still be plaguing us, our SELF Magazine Chicago Team is also still basking in the memories of the Avon39 Walk to End Breast Cancer.
We walked through a sunny and fun Saturday and then through a lightning/hail storm on Sunday, but we made it each and every of the 39.3 miles through our beautiful city. We were so lucky to have family fans come out to support our team, but some of the best and most impactful memories were of the support we received from the city of Chicago. Families cheering from open windows and front porches, friends standing and clapping from restaurant patios, and businesses putting out balloons and motivational signs. These were the things that made us smile and kept us walking.
Well, those and all the delicious snacks! 😉 But in all seriousness, breast cancer is a disease that, as women, is something we take very seriously. For women in the US, breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer aside from lung cancer. And one in eight US women will will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Even more than that will be affected by breast cancer through family members or friends with the disease. These are real stats, and only through more research, funding, and work can we hope to change them. Our team raised more than $7,000 and the Chicago Avon39 Walk raised $5 million overall!
We were beyond honored to be a part of the event this past weekend and to help with this movement. SELF Magazine got us moving, and our Avon39 support team – those we know and those we saw along the road – kept us going. Thank you, each and every one of you who donated, walked with us, cheered us on and more, for helping us earn our 39.
