Spring is a time for fresh starts. The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and it’s time to break out the colors in your wardrobe and your home. Since us Chicago girls are working with limited space and budgets, it’s always important to find simple ways to make updates with maximum punch. So we worked with our friends at Value City Furniture (American Signature Furniture for our Southern readers) to add some color, fun and comfort to our space for spring…
There are plenty of ways to update your house for springtime, but the best place to start is the spot where everyone gathers and spends the most time: the living room. If you live in the city, it’s likely you have less than an expansive amount of room to work with, but with a few simple steps, your living room will be spring-ready.
The best, and easiest tip is to insert some color. Add a pop of color to your favorite room and, and especially, one of your favorite pieces of furniture. While 2015 has thus far been all about the deep wine shade of marsala, this season deserves a hint of something a little more tropical-inspired. Think bright oranges and blues or yellows and pink for fun highlights on a more neutral palette. We started with our gray sofa, and layered in color in a few simple ways …
- Make for the market
The best part of spring is the flowers blooming…and their availability at your neighborhood farmer’s markets! There are plenty of inexpensive blooms to be had this time of year (we love tulips!), and they will add a fresh scent and look to any side or coffee table. You can buy a premade bouquet, but it’s also fun to pick your own stems and make it yourself.
- Throw on a pretty hue
We love curling up on our gray Adrian Graphite Sofa any time of year. But the color can feel a little dark for a bright, sunny spring or summer day. Adding pops of color with a few throw pillows and a bright blanket instantly dresses the sofa for the season.
- Hit the books
Another easy, inexpensive decor idea is to stack up your books and magazines. They act as art for your table, plus, they’re great to have on hand when guests come to visit or to flip through yourself. Balance them on a coffee table like the Paradiso Cocktail Table or a side table so they’re at arms reach. There’s no shame in choosing these books by their covers!
- Spring is in the air
Even if it’s just a candle. Candles can brighten a room in all sorts of ways. Having people over in the evening and want to create a welcoming vibe? Is your coffee table vignette missing something? Want to give your room a fresh scent? One candle can fix all of these ills, and if you pick one in a coordinating color to your pillows, it will pull the whole room together.
- Little extras make a big difference
Once you are finished with all the necessities of a room, make sure to put your own personal touch on the space too. If you love the color blue, the sprinkle trinkets on side tables to add more color. Or, try adding a table lamp on top of the end tables on either side of the sofa. The main goal here is the make the room feel like yours; just the spring version of itself!
