On Monday, November 18, Nedenia Hutton Craig will host a trunk show for her lux, made-to-order clothing line, DEE HUTTON, at the Harvard Club in Boston (details at the bottom of the post!).
I’m particularly interested in checking out her collection (she launched earlier this year, and it’s available through her Manhattan showroom or traveling trunk shows) because of her background. Hutton Craig is a pedigreed fashionista: her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were New York City socialites each renowned for her style (her grandmother was on the international best-dressed list), which she uses as inspiration for the line. Talk about having a unique perspective on fashion.
Anyway, I got a chance to talk briefly with the designer, who goes by Dee, about her collection, the unique concept behind it, and why she chose the Harvard Club for her Boston trunk show.
EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT BEHIND YOUR LINE?
The concept is an ode to the way that luxury customers used to shop for their clothes -especially occasion pieces. It was an indulgent process; private appointments and trunk shows with designers, a collaboration on best colors and fabrics. It was more personal, social and fun. Like a fashion event where you are the guest of honor. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t want that type of experience, and it’s been a bit lost over time.
IT WAS INSPIRED BY WOMEN IN YOUR FAMILY. WHAT WAS THEIR STYLE LIKE? WHY DID YOU FIND THEM SO INSPIRING?
My great grandmother was the queen of dress up. She used to throw the most elaborate costume balls. Some pieces of her costumes and finery got handed down to us and we used to wear them for dress-up. My grandmother is a hall of famer on the international best dressed list. And my mom was the fashion renegade. She pushed the limits and expectations with her clothes – full sequin tuxedos and red leather. My style is a bit of a jumble of all three, I suppose.
WHAT’S THE BEST FASHION ADVICE YOU EVER GOT FROM YOUR GRANDMOTHER OR GREAT GRANDMOTHER? WHAT DID THEY TEACH YOU ABOUT STYLE?
From my great grandmother, the concept of more is more, from my grandmother, quality is everything, and from my mother, fashion should be fun.
WHERE DO YOU IMAGINE YOUR CUSTOMERS WEARING YOUR DRESSES?
A charity ball, a black tie party, your cousins wedding, your country club, or just a fun night out on the town…anywhere that you want to look and feel your absolute best and want to stand out. These pieces are made for you. Most likely, you will not see anyone else wearing the same thing, and that’s special.
YOUR TRUNK SHOW IS AT THE HARVARD CLUB- ANY REASON FOR THAT LOCATION?
There’s nothing like the Harvard club for a sense of old world glamour. My best friend and business partner’s family are members, thankfully. We have tons of friends in the area, we both went to Brown close by, so Boston holds a special place in our hearts. We will always do trunk shows here.
