As you might remember from our post a while back, we’ve teamed up with the experts at Sassoon this year to bring you all that is new, good, and interesting in the world of hair.* In an exchange with their team recently, a word was mentioned that immediately piqued my interest because it’s a major trend that I’ve wanted to try but haven’t quite managed to take the plunge into yet: Contouring. Except, we weren’t talking about makeup, we were talking about hair…which somehow seemed a lot more foolproof that doing some literal face painting.
So I decided to investigate further. Turns out: all you really need to add contour to your face is the right haircut and a good color. Here, Sassoon Creative Director Lisa Baber and Color Director Carmen Gallander are offering up the lowdown on getting a face-contouring hairstyle that would make Kim K. jealous, plus sharing the details of Sassoon’s latest collection of haircuts, TORQUE.
Contouring with cosmetics is a huge beauty trend, but can a hairstyle really help you achieve similar results without spending 30 minutes a day on your makeup?
Totally! You can achieve a look similar to contouring when your hair is cut to the shape of your head or face. When you get a good cut from the beginning, it also makes styling effortless. – Lisa Baber, Sassoon Creative Director
Contouring was a big consideration for TORQUE. What are some tips for choosing the best TORQUE haircut for your face shape?
TORQUE is all about undercutting. The idea is to free hair from solidity and excess volume. There is lots of movement in this collection. When choosing a cut from the TORQUE collection make sure you consult with your stylist about the features that you would like to bring out. – Lisa Baber
What about choosing the best haircut for your hair type?
Yes, this huge! It is important that the haircut works with your texture and your face shape. At Sassoon, we always take that into consideration. For example, fine hair needs a stronger shape and curly hair often needs movement and layers. People with thick hair need the right type of layering to remove weight in the right areas. – Lisa Baber
What about color? How do you know what color will give your face the best contour?
If you’d like to bring the attention and focus to your face, be sure to place lighter colors in the area directly near your hairline. If you feel that lighter colors wash you out out – you can try placing the lighter colors just off the hairline. Choosing a color that gives your face the optimum contour is all about accentuating your features. – Carmen Gallander, Sassoon Color Director
What inspired this current collection of haircuts? How do they complement current fashion and beauty trends?
TORQUE is inspired by the 1960s designers Paco Rabanne and Ungaro. The collection reflects on the minimalism of fashion. We’ve used an incredibly fine ‘highlighting’- or ‘slicing’- technique, which moves from a more solid color to a subtle feel towards the back of the head. It has an amazing reflective quality that’s reinforced by the metallic accents of the wardrobe. – Lisa Baber
