Brian Appel and Mike Snow, co-founders of Boston Calling
Boston Calling kicks off tomorrow…again. It’s the second iteration of the festival in only four months, which is pretty impressive considering that Boston Calling only launched this year: the fact that the festival is hosting a second weekend in such a short time period speaks volumes about its success.
Since I find rounding up a group of friends for dinner to be a difficult event-planning task, putting on a music festival with bands, food, thousands of strangers, a beer tent, etc., seems like a feat of insurmountable proportions. So I jumped at the chance to pick the brain of one of the event’s co-founders, Brian Appel. Check out what he had to say about getting Boston Calling off the ground, plans for its future, and what to expect for this weekend.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START BOSTON CALLING?
We had been doing events on city property for years with The Boston Phoenix and WFNX and saw a great opportunity to create something new in the Boston event landscape
HOW WAS THE RESPONSE TO THE FIRST FESTIVAL?
It was very positive overall. We were happy that people had such a good time (despite the weather!) and the mayor’s office, police and municipal departments were pleased with the outcome. We had some changes to make, and we are doing them for September.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU PLAN TO PUT ON THE FESTIVAL GOING FORWARD? ANY GOALS FOR NEXT YEAR?
Next year is a work in progress, right now we are very focused on this weekend!
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT ACTS TO TARGET FOR THE LINEUP?
It’s a combination of The Bowery Presents, our group, and Aaron Dessner from The National. We look at artists that we all like, artists that will be touring, and then start to build out the lineup.
DID YOU FACE ANY CHALLENGES GETTING BOSTON CALLING OFF THE GROUND? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO PUT THE FIRST ONE TOGETHER?
Many challenges. It’s a long road to navigate to get the first one off the ground. The second was a little smoother, and we hope the trend continues. We spent over a year working on the first one.
ANY TAKEAWAYS OR LEARNING EXPERIENCES FROM THE FIRST BOSTON CALLING THAT YOU’RE IMPLEMENTING AT THIS ONE? Better layout. You’ll see…
WHAT ACTS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS WEEKEND?
I really like the Gaslight Anthem, high energy show, people will love them. Also can’t wait to let all these DJ’s loose on City Hall Plaza.
ANY TIPS FOR ENJOYING BOSTON CALLING?
Come early, catch the younger bands that kick off the day. Come and go as you please from the festival grounds. No pushing.
