Best Jean Shorts for Your Body Type This Summer

Jeans II

Spring is finally here, and summer seems to be just around the corner, so it’s time to start doing those squats and getting ready for shorts season!  Classic but always dependable, jean shorts of all kinds are still the place to start building your casual summer wardrobe, but finding the right pair isn’t always easy.  We have top tips and recommendations for finding that perfect pair of cut-offs to show off your stems…

Jean Shorts

Jeans are always a tough wardrobe staple to master, and jean shorts are in the same family.  Buying a pair that is even a little too short, long, tight, loose, ripped or colored can make a huge difference.  Luckily, we tapped our friends at the new Silver Jeans store at the Woodfield Mall in Chicago, as well as fashion industry experts to make your jean short shopping easy, no matter what your body type!

Short Legs:

If you’ve got shorter stems (like me), your safest bet are shorts that hit at the middle of your thigh. Any longer and they’ll make you look shorter overall and make your legs look more stumpy. The perfect pair should make your legs look longer, so you can also embrace micro-minis if you dare! Shorter legs means you can wear shorter inseams and still avoid showing too much skin.

I love these more classic cut-offs from Free People that show a little more leg, or these indigo options from Splendid that can be worn lower on the hips for more coverage.

Boyish Figure:

Pick a pair that will give you some J.Lo-esque curves! A higher-waisted option will draw attention to your slim waist and break up your shape. For even more emphasis, add a bright belt, or tuck at least the front of your shirt in. Pleats also give the illusion of an hourglass figure while still maintaining a slim look to your hips. Similar to high waisted shorts, adding a belt or a tuck goes well with this style, but make sure to pick a shirt with a more streamlined cut.

Teaspoon (left) and LA’t by L’Agence (right) shorts, both from Bloomingdale’s

I love these more casual and traditional cut-offs from One Teaspoon that sit higher on the hip bone and these LA’t by L’Agence drawstring shorts have front pockets that add eye catching interest.  A third choice would be the Suki from Silver Jeans, which offers a higher rise.

Now is not the time to be shy about your curves! Shorts are the perfect opportunity to accentuate your waist and highlight how skinny your legs get as they go down. A dark wash is obviously the most flattering, but make sure the shorts hit at the smallest point on your thigh.  That will draw the eye and create a slimming effect.  Wear a lighter colored or patterned top with a statement necklace to complete the look.

Joe’s Jeans from Piperlime (left) and Silver Jeans (right) shorts

I personally wear the Silver Aiko shorts and I love the lace detailing!  These Joe’s Jeans cut-offs are also a great option in a darker shade.  They’re the perfect flattering length and color.

Stick to no-fuss shorts without too many details like rips or slant pockets that pucker. These will only draw attention to your hips and thighs. Pick a clean and classic pair with a mid-thigh length. A cute cuff will also draw attention away from your hips and onto your lovely legs.

Anthropologie (left) and J. Crew (right) shorts

This classic J. Crew style is a great option, as is this pair from Anthropologie which has that flattering cuff. A great pair that’s a little bit longer are these Suki’s from Silver Jeans.

You have more options in terms of colors, so choose a mid waist pair in with patterns or a lighter wash jeans.  You can go even bolder with neon or solid-colored denim as well, but be sure to pick shorts that are no longer than mid-thigh.  Any longer will make your legs look shorter and add bulk to them.

For patterns, I love this doily-patterned pair from Swank Boutique out of Missouri, and for a more classic colored option, this white pair from Silver Jeans is a fun spring/summer color.

Happy Shopping!
