Fall is one of the best seasons for makeup: you don’t have to worry about it sweating off like you do in the summer, you still might have a hint of a tan, and you can break out all of those dark berry lipstick and nail polish shades that’ve been tucked away in your makeup bag since March. And, given the fact that September is fashion month, fall is also one of the biggest times of year for new beauty trends — the stunning (or crazy) makeup looks that models sport down the runway are often translated by bloggers, street style stars, and the fashionista-next-door almost instantly, becoming the new big thing by the time the leaves have fallen off the ground.
This year, one of these new, avant-garde trends seems to be picking up steam especially quickly, and it has us going, “huh?”
It’s gold lipstick. The trend was originally spotted at Prada’s SS16 runway show just barely a week ago, dreamed up by superstar makeup artist Pat McGrath, who coated models’ lips with gold pigment. Since then, the trend has been covered by Allure, InStyle called it one of the reasons “Prada’s SS16 show sent us to beauty heaven,” and Vogue said the look nearly stole the show.
Gold lips are a showstopper, for sure, but in everyday life, we’re going to make a generalization that the gilded effect probably isn’t for everyone. So, we did some investigating to see what sorts of golden lipstick options were currently on the market…and surprise! It’s kind of a lot. Here’s what we found, from solid 24 karat shades, to more subtle tones that offer just a touch of glimmer.
As close to the runway trend as you’ll get:
NYX Cosmetics Wicked Lippie in Mischevious, available at ULTA is highly pigmented, meaning it’ll give you the best shot at the runway look.
A good middle-of-the-road hue:
Dolce & Gabbana Beauty Shine Lipstick in Gold 70 is semi-sheer, for a softer take on the look.
Anna Sui Lipstick in Gold is almost gloss-like, perfect for layering over another shade or wearing solo.
