You’d think at this point we’d have solved the old “first date outfit dilemma, but alas every time I help another friend get ready for a Bumble date, or I find myself raiding my closet sorting through endless black tee shirts before a dinner date, I’m reminded that first dates bring out our worst outfit indecisiveness. Your favorite black blouse and skinny jean combo might’ve been cute enough for drinks with your friends, but is it first date ready? To get some insight (and inspiration) on what my fellow ladies wear, I asked 7 fashionable ladies from NYC to California to weigh in on what they’d wear on a first date. Be sure to read on before your next Tinder date, and let us know your first date approved outfit in the comments.
“You can’t go wrong with your trusty skinny jeans (I love the BDG Urban Outfitters ones), black booties, and a cute top. I’ve really been feeling the bodysuit trend that’s been everywhere the past year, so for a nighttime look at a hip bar I’d wear high-waisted black skinnies, a bodysuit, and a leather or bomber jacket to top it off! And of course I never leave the house without my red lipstick (MAC’s Perfect Score ).” –Chelsea, 29
“I’m a lingerie girl for sure, so I would wear a cute bra (my favorite brand is For Love And Lemons) and pair it with a top that shows just a little bit (whether it’s the rib cage or a super deep V) and top it off with jeans and my go-to Rag & Bone ankle booties to make it more casual. As for jewelry, I go for delicate pieces that won’t detract from my outfit.” –Juliette, 22
“I would go with a look that is classic and timeless. I feel like a date will always respond well to that (whether they know a lot about fashion or not). My go-to would be a black dress with a blazer in either black or a bold color. Then some statement jewelry and fun shoes to show my personality. In fact, on my first date with my soon-to-be-husband I wore a black satin dress with an electric blue blazer and my favorite layered gold necklace.” -Julia, 26
“I stick to simple pieces that are casual enough to go to a dive bar, but sophisticated enough just in case we go somewhere nice. You can’t go wrong with dark skinny jeans (I love Paige denim) and a cute flowy top that shows just a little cleavage. When in doubt, I choose black because it matches everything!” – Victoria, 21
“I read this article in Cosmo when I first started dating where an editor wrote that her #1 fashion rule was to wear a white tee with a black bra on a first date. It always stuck with me and I’ve been doing it ever since…it hasn’t steered me wrong yet!” –Megan, 32
“I’m a big believer in good luck, so I always wear something that I had good memories in so I can hopefully keep the streak going. I’ve even been known to swear off a shirt I like after a bad first date!” –Olivia, 26
“I’m from California, so my style can best be described as bohemian and beachy, so I would wear a pair of One Teaspoon denim cutoffs, Sam Edelman ankle boots, and an Ella Moss black blouse.” –Chloe, 27
